PHILADELPHIA – The University of Pennsylvania track and field teams split up on their trips south this past weekend, as part of the group went to the three-day Raleigh Relays and the rest continued further to Miami for the Hurricane Collegiate Invitational on Saturday.
Â
The weekend had plenty of highlights, including a pair of program records in the 10,000m in North Carolina. After setting several records during the indoor season,
Maeve Stiles and
Dylan Throop marked their names in the outdoor book down at the Raleigh Relays. Stiles took 17th overall with a time of 33:49.19, while Throop came through in 12th with a time of 28:48.59.
Â
Stiles jumps Cleo Whiting's 2017 program-record time of 34:09.65. Throop eclipses a long-standing time set back in 1976 by one of the best runners in program history, Dave Merrick, who clocked a 10k time of 28:49.2.
Â
The Quakers had a handful of top-20 performances at Raleigh Relays, headlined by a ninth-place finish by
Scott Dochat in the hammer throw. With a distance of 60.51m (198-6), he moved into fourth in program history.
Â
Penn also had a successful trip to Miami, putting up five marks that land in the program record book, while the Quakers earned four victories.
Â
One of the wins came at the women's 100m, as freshmen
Moforehan Abinusawa and
Christiana Nwachuku went first and second, respectively, while
Caia Gelli came in for a 10th-place finish. Abinusawa clocked a time of 11.63 for second in program history, while Nwachuku came in close behind at 11.83 for fifth in the record book.
Â
Also on the track, the women claimed a win in the 4x100m, as Nwachuku, Abinusawa,
Katherine Muccio, and
Isabella Whittaker teams up for a time of 45.60 for the fifth-best time in program history. The men also collected a relay victory, taking the 4x400m. A foursome of
Andrew O'Donnell,
Devante Heywood,
Robbie Ruppel, and
Antaures Jackson came through with a time of 3:12.28 for the win.
Â
The other victory took place on the infield at the pole vault, as
James Rhoads cleared 5.25m (17-2.75) for the win. In the women's pole vault,
Nataliia Ilieva had an outstanding outing as well, taking second over with a clearance of 4.05m (13-3.5), a mark good enough for second in program history.
Â
The record book was also hit in another track event in Miami.
Jake Rose took fifth in the 110m hurdles with a time of 14.22 to shift into 10th.
