How It Happened
Padilla tied up the program record on the first bucket of the game, catching an inside pass from Toonders in the left corner where she capitalized from deep. However, the Bears responded with a three of their own on the next possession.
Â
The Quakers ignited a run shortly after when Caldwell subbed in and cashed in on an elbow jumper. She was a part of the entire 7-0 run for Penn, dishing an assist to Toonders and capping it off with a three on the right wing to push a 10-3 advantage by the 6:01 mark.
Â
Brown didn't go away, working its way back into the game and tying it up at 14-14. On the final possession of the quarter, Toonders connected underneath as she finished the first quarter with eight points to lead the way.
Â
The Bears evened the game back up to start the second, 16-16, but the frame belonged to the Quakers. Over the course of the quarter, Penn outscored the Bears, 21-11, and creeping out to their largest lead of the game at that point of 12 by the 3:10 mark when senior
Silke Milliman hit a jumper, 32-20. In that stretch, Padilla nailed her second three to set the program record.
Â
In the closing minutes, Brown was able to drop it back down to a single-digit deficit twice, but Padilla knocked in her third from deep at the buzzer to give Penn a 37-25 lead to take to the locker room.
Â
A slow start to the third quarter saw the Bears use a 9-0 run to get back within three within the first three minutes of the restart, forcing Penn to call a timeout. The break proved helpful, as the Quakers came out an hit a jumper from the hands of Obi to halt the momentum.
Â
Brown would eventually tie the game up twice at 39-39 and 41-41, but a quick 5-0 stretch by Penn involving a three by Padilla and a transition layup by Obi pushed the Quakers back out by five and forced the Bears into a timeout.
Â
Like the Quakers' timeout earlier, it proved useful for the Bears as well. In the closing three minutes of the quarter, they tied the game up twice including the 51-51 tally that the game took into the final frame.
Â
Brown's first lead of the game came at the 9:06 mark of the fourth, 53-51, and pushed ahead by six points nearly four minutes in. The Quakers called timeout to regroup and came out of it with two jumpers by Padilla that sandwiched a Brown layup to trail by just four. However, that was the closest Penn got the rest of the way as the Bears hit their free throws down the stretch to take the final decision.
