Five Named All-Ivy in Men’s Soccer; Gill Repeats as Coach of the Year

PHILADELPHIA – The Ivy League announced its men's soccer postseason honors on Wednesday afternoon, with five Quakers garnering spots on the All-Ivy teams and James C. Gentle Head Coach Brian Gill earning a major postseason award.

Leo Burney, Nick Christoffersen, and Michael Hewes grabbed spots on first team and are joined by Stas Korzeniowski on second team, while Ben Do landed honorable mention. Gill earned Ivy League Coach of the Year for the second straight season to complete Penn's postseason reign.

Burney, who was Defensive Player of the Year in 2022, led a strong Quaker backend this season, allowing opponents to attempt only 55 shots on Christoffersen, with ten hitting the back of his net in the regular season. The junior played 1,330 minutes this season and started in all 15 games.

Christoffersen makes his first appearance on All-Ivy first team after earning second team last year, collecting two Ivy League Defensive Player of the Week honors during the season. The goalkeeper started in the net in all 15 games this season, playing the full 90 minutes in every match. The Toronto native leads the conference in shutouts with seven. The senior made 43 saves on the season, holding a 0.67 goals-against-average and 0.811 save percentage. Christoffersen also earned Penn's spot on the All-Ivy Academic team for his performance in the classroom.

Midfielder Hewes makes his first All-Ivy appearance after leading the Quaker offense with eight goals and 18 points this season, including his first career hat trick against Penn State back in September. The senior started in every game this year, tallying two game-winning goals against Penn State and Columbia. Hewes is the reigning Ivy League Offensive Player of the Week, a title he has won twice during the season.

Forward Korzeniowski is no stranger to postseason honors, earning Offensive Player of the Year in 2022. Korzeniowski led the Ivy League in assists this season after dishing out seven goals to his teammates. The junior leads the Red and Blue with 18 shots on goal, netting five on the year, with two coming from Penn's 3-1 win over UAlbany. Korzeniowski, who was named Offensive Player of the Week twice this season, is one point behind Hewes in total points with 17.

Defender Do makes his second postseason award appearance with his honorable mention nod. The junior played in 15 games this season, starting in all but one, docking 1,255 playing minutes. Do was crucial offensively this season, lending a helping hand on five of Penn's goals and attempting seven of his own shots on net.

Two-time Coach of the Year, Gill, led the Red and Blue to their fifth straight season at .500 or better after Penn tallied a 7-3-5 record this season. The Quakers knocked off No. 14 Penn State on the road for the first time in program history to highlight non-conference play. Penn went 4-1-2 in Ivy play this year, grabbing wins over Cornell, Harvard, Columbia, and Princeton, with the victories over the Big Red and Lions being shutouts.

The Quakers shift their focus to hosting the inaugural Ivy League Tournament this weekend. Penn will take on the No. 4 seed Brown Bears in the semifinals at 6:30 p.m. on Friday at Penn Park.
