PHILADELPHIA – Nearly two months away from setting out to defend its back-to-back Gymnastics East Conference regular season and tournament championships, the University of Pennsylvania gymnastics team announced its 2024 schedule on Monday.
Â
The Quakers will host four meets—a dual and three quads—with the season officially kicking off on January 5.
Â
"We're excited to kick off our season at home this year hosting the Keystone Classic for the first time," said head coach
Kirsten Becker. "We have a stacked schedule from January all the way to March and we're excited to begin competing towards another GEC title.
Â
"Our home meets this season all have a significant meaning, making them a little extra special."
Â
Penn will begin action by hosting Penn State, Pitt and Temple for the Keystone Classic before heading onto the road for the first time on January 14 at George Washington where it'll face Cornell, Temple and Yale.
Â
The schedule shifts over to Morgantown, W.V., where the Quakers will hit the road and take on West Virginia on Sunday, January 21. That's the first of three straight on the road as Penn heads to GEC foe Yale a week later on Sunday, January 28.
Â
Competing in Upper Marlborough, Md. on Friday, February 2, Towson will host the Quakers, George Washington and William & Mary. Two days later on Sunday, February 4, Penn hosts Bridgeport and Cornell for its Alumni Meet.
Â
It'll be a Philadelphia showdown between Penn and Temple on Friday, February 9 at The Palestra with the Quakers hosting their Senior Meet.
Â
That leads to a trip to Long Island on Saturday, February 17 at LIU, featuring Cornell for the second time.
Â
The Quakers will host their third quad meet of the campaign on Saturday, February 24 in the Ivy Classic as Penn takes on Brown, Cornell and Yale, searching for its first victory in the meet since 2020.
Â
Penn closes the regular season with four consecutive meets away from home—Fisk (March 2), Temple (March 7), NC State (March 10) and Rutgers (March 15)—before heading to New Haven for the 2024 Gymnastics East Conference Championships in a attempt to repeat as champions for a third straight year.
Â
"Personally, I am looking forward to the team heading to Nashville to take on Fisk, who is under the leadership of one of my former coaches at Penn, Corrinne Tarver," Becker said. "They are the first HBCU to add a gymnastics program and we are looking forward to traveling to see them and being a part of just their second season as a team."
Â
The Quakers have made significant strides as a program since Becker took over as head coach in 2020. They continue to grow after winning regular season titles and conference championships in each of her two seasons. Penn returns five first team and seven second-team All-GEC selections from a season ago.
