PHILADELPHIA – Junior third baseman
Wyatt Henseler and senior pitcher
Owen Coady have been named Ivy League Preseason Player of the Year and Pitcher of the Year, respectively, by D1Baseball.
Henseler was named First-Team All-Ivy last season, and Coady was named Honorable Mention.
One of five players to start all 48 games for the Quakers, Henseler got off to a slow start in conference play, going hitless in his first eight at-bats, but he got back on track quickly, finishing the year with a .337 batting average, a .445 on-base percentage, and a .565 slugging percentage in conference play, with 15 of his 31 hits going for extra bases; Henseler was also hit by a pitch 11 times, three more than any other player in Ivy action. Overall, Henseler finished the year with a .383 batting average, 14 home runs, 53 RBI, 57 runs, 72 hits, 131 total bases, 23 walks, and a 1.184 OPS. His home run, hits, runs, and total bases marks were all Penn single-season records.
Coady made eight appearances out of the bullpen in Ivy action for the Quakers in 2022 and was utterly dominant for much of that stretch, including a run of 17 consecutive innings over four appearances in April, during which time he allowed just three runs and 10 hits while walking six and striking out 24 batters. For the year, Coady was second in batting average against (.225) and led all relievers in strikeouts (41) and wins (five) in conference play. Overall, Coady finished the year with a 7-1 record, a 2.80 ERA, a 1.13 WHIP, 74 strikeouts in just 54.2 innings, and a batting average against of .200.
Henseler, Coady, and the rest of the Quakers open the 2023 season Friday, February 24 against national powerhouse South Carolina, part of an 11-game road trip to kick off the season.
