Fencing Picks Up Five Wins At Penn State Invitational; Ma One Win Shy of 500

PHILADELPHIA – The University of Pennsylvania's men's and women's fencing teams picked up five victories between them at the Penn State Invitational Sunday afternoon, pulling Young Family Head Coach of Fencing Andy Ma within one win of 500 for his career at Penn.

The women, #20 in the United States Fencing Coaches' Association (USFCA) poll, finished the day 2-3 with a 14-13 win over #20 North Carolina and a 27-0 win over Haverford. The Quakers also came up just short against Duke (14-13) and the #8 host Nittany Lions (15-12).

The epeeists took all nine points in the Haverford bout, as well as 13 of a possible 18 points in the wins over North Carolina and Duke.

The #7 men started the day with back-to-back wins over #20 North Carolina and Duke. After falling to the host Nittany Lions, #17 in the USFCA poll, Penn responded with a convincing 22-5 win over #22 Haverford, before ending the day with a tough loss to #3 Columbia, 16-11.

The epeeists took all nine points in the bout with North Carolina, while the sabre group came away with seven points in the bout with Penn State and five against North Carolina.

Both teams will return to action next weekend when they host the Philadelphia Invitational January 21 and 22.
