BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – The University of Pennsylvania track and field team was back in action on day two of the 2022 NCAA Outdoor East Region Preliminaries on Thursday, seeing the first competition by the women. Senior
Mayyi Mahama headlined the day with a program-record performance in the hammer throw.

Mahama opened the day for the Quakers, taking fifth place overall in the hammer, tossing a program-record third and final attempt of 66.93m (219-7). She will now advance to national championships in Eugene, Oregon as a top-12 finisher.

Her distance reset the mark in the record book, a distance she set back in 2019 of 65.66 (215-5). She was four meters shy of the top finisher from North Carolina, Jillian Shippee.

Kirstin West also was competing in throws on Thursday in the javelin. Of her three attempts, her best throw was the second, throwing a distance of 37.28m (122-4) for 16th in her flight.

On the track, three more Quakers put their talents to the test.
Skyla Wilson started it off in the 100m hurdles, taking third in her heat with a time of 13.47 to automatically qualify for the quarterfinals on Saturday night in Indiana. She finished 18th overall in the field of 48.

Wilson joined
Haley Rizek in the 400m hurdles later in the afternoon. Wilson took fifth in her heat with a time of 59.90, while Rizek took sixth in her race at 1:00.30.

Bronwyn Patterson was also competing on Thursday in the 800m, her first trip as a freshman to East Preliminaries. She finished sixth in her heat with a time of 2:08.43, taking 38th overall.

The Quakers continue preliminaries on Friday with the final competition for the men. Penn will be represented by three student-athletes.
Conrad Moore will take on the high jump at 2:30 p.m., while
Michael Keehan and
William Hare will compete in the 3,000m steeplechase at 5:40 p.m.
