Men's Basketball Honors Seniors, Presents Awards at Banquet

PHILADELPHIA – The University of Pennsylvania men's basketball team announced its yearly award winners at the team's annual banquet, which took place at The Palestra on Saturday, May 7.

Sophomore guard Jordan Dingle was named recipient of the Arthur Kiefaber Most Valuable Player Award. A first-team All-Ivy, All-Big 5, All-ECAC and NABC All-District selection, Dingle put together one of the most prolific offensive seasons in program history in 2021-22, scoring 542 points across 26 appearances for an Ivy League-leading, 20.8 per-game average—a number that rose to 21.2 ppg in Ivy play. He ended up as just the fifth player in program history to finish a season with a per-game average above 20, the most recent being Keven McDonald who averaged 21.2 ppg in 1976-77 and 22.3 in 1977-78. Dingle scored in double figures in 23 of his 26 games this season, barely missing that mark in each of the other three when he scored nine. That includes 16 games with at least 20 points and a staggering six with more than 30. The last Penn player to record that many 30-point games in the same season was Ernie Beck as a junior all the way back in 1951-52. Five of Dingle's 30-point games came in Ivy play, the first time that has happened in program history.

Senior guard Jelani Williams was honored as this year's Bus McDonald Award winner as the program's Most Inspirational Player. Williams started Penn's first 24 games before suffering an injury that shelved him for the final three games of the regular season; he then started and played in Penn's Ivy Tournament semifinal. The senior averaged 6.0 points and 3.7 rebounds per game this season, tied for the team lead with 29 steals and was third with 51 assists. Williams played this season after missing his first four due to three ACL tears (2017-18, 2018-19, 2019-20) and the Ivy League's COVID-19 restrictions (2020-21). When Williams took the floor against Florida State on November 10, it was his first live game action in 1,789 days dating back to his senior year at Sidwell Friends in Washington, D.C.

Sophomore guard Clark Slajchert was named this year's winner of the G. Fred DiBona Award as the team's top newcomer. Slajchert played in 25 games, making starts against Arkansas and Dartmouth. He averaged 10.7 points per game—good for second on the team and 15th among Ivy League players—and also had 33 assists and 11 steals while averaging 2.1 rebounds per game. He finished second on the team with 15 double-figure scoring games, ten of them coming in Ivy League play, and he led the Quakers in scoring in four games.

Penn also gave out the "Billy Basic Award" for the second time on Saturday. This year's winners were junior forward Lucas Monroe and senior forward Griffin Ryan. Monroe was one of just two players to play in all 28 games in 2021-22, making nine starts. He averaged 4.8 points and 4.5 rebounds per game, led Penn with 12 blocked shots, and had 23 assists and 16 steals. Ryan appeared in five games in 2021-22.

Penn finished the year with a 12-16 overall record and took third place in the Ivy League standings at 9-5. The Quakers advanced to the Ivy League Tournament, losing in the semifinal round to eventual tournament champion Yale.
