Rider Knocks Off Baseball 6-5 Behind Late-Inning Rally

PHILADELPHIA – The University of Pennsylvania baseball team dropped a non-conference contest to Rider University, 6-5, from Meiklejohn Stadium on Wednesday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Penn (26-10) flew out of the blocks, putting each of the first six batters on base. Tommy Courtney led off with a single, Jackson Appel walked, and Wyatt Henseler singled to load the bases. Ben Miller followed with a walk to force in a run, Cole Palis was hit by a pitch to force in another run, and Craig Larsen drew a walk to force in the third run of the inning. Seth Werchan tacked on the final run of the frame with a sacrifice fly.

Strong pitching from both sides held court over the next several innings, as neither team put a runner past second base until the top of the sixth when Rider (21-18) broke through for its first run of the game.

Penn's 4-1 lead held until the top of the eighth when three walks and three hits led to five Rider runs, putting the Broncs up 6-4.

With two out and no one on in the ninth, Courtney singled, stole second, and scored on a single by Appel. Henseler stepped to the plate as the winning run, but fouled out to first to end the game.
