NEW HAVEN, Conn. - The University of Pennsylvania baseball team's offense was the story of the day Friday, as the Quakers picked up a 27-4 win over the Yale University Bulldogs in an Ivy League series opener from George H.W. Bush '48 Field.
Â
Penn (27-10, 13-2) scored 27 runs for the second time this season, the first coming back on April 9/10 against Harvard in a game that was suspended due to lightning.
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Quakers jumped out to an early lead, scoring five runs in the first inning; all with two outs. Starting with back-to-back doubles from
Wyatt Henseler and
Ben Miller, two hit batsmen were followed by two walks, which
Nate Polo took full advantage of, driving in two more with a single. The five runs would be all the Quakers would need, but the offense was long done from scoring
Â
Â
Ben Miller launched his sixth home run of the season in the second, putting two more on the board. The Quakers tacked on another run in the fourth on a
Jackson Appel solo shot.
Â
Kevin Eaise held the Bulldogs scoreless through the first three innings, striking out six along the way. In the fourth, he gave up two home runs as Yale (17-16, 7-9) closed to within 8-3, but Penn's bats provided additional breathing room in the fifth.
Â
Cole Palis lead off with a single and then stole second with
Andrew Hernandez at the plate. The senior, DHing in the game, would hit his first of three RBI doubles, plating Palis.
Â
Â
A
Tommy Courtney sac fly and Appel single produced two more runs for the Quakers, who held a commanding 11-3 advantage.
Â
Eaise battled through a fifth inning that resulted in another run for the Bulldogs, but Penn through the 5th inning, where he gave up another run, but quickly ended the Bulldogs threat with a big strikeout with two outs and two runners on base… to the 6th inning we go.
Â
The Quakers doubled their run total for the day with an 11-run sixth inning put the Quakers up 22-4, which started with three straight singles from Henseler, Miller, and Larsen (which scored Henseler).Â
Â
Hernandez followed up with his second RBI double of the game, and Polo followed with a single driving in his third run of the day to make it 15-4.
Â
Â
Courtney dumped a single into left field to load the bases, and Appel followed with a sac fly. Henseler was then hit by a pitch to reload them for Miller, who continued his great day at the plate, ripping a single into center field to score two more.
Â
After an infield single from Larsen, the bases were once again loaded for
Cole Palis, who drilled a double down the left field line for Penn's 19th and 20th runs of the day.
Â
Â
Next up stepped Hernandez, who drilled his third RBI double of the day, this time scoring two.
Â
Â
Seth Devries entered in the seventh for Eaise, and the senior worked a quick and easy scoreless 6th inning.
Â
The Quakers monster day at the plate was
still far from over, so they put up another five runs in the 7th. Polo led off with a long double, and
Cole McGonigal, pinch-hitting for Courtney, drove in Polo with a single on the first pitch, which made it a 23-4 game.
Â
As was the case in the first inning, back-to-back hit batsmen were followed by back-to-back walks, making the score 25-6.Â
Â
Freshman
Alex Gabauer came to the plate for his first plate appearance of the season, and, after a run came home on a wild pitch, he drove in a run with a groundout. Fellow Freshman
Eli Trop worked three scoreless, hitless innings, earning the save, striking out three batters over those three framesinnings.
