Baseball Splits Doubleheader With Yale; Takes Sixth Straight Ivy Series

NEW HAVEN, Conn. - The Penn Quakers split a doubleheader with Yale University Saturday afternoon, dropping Game 1 and taking Game 2, clinching their sixth straight Ivy League series win

How it Happened (Game 1)
The game was scoreless through 3.5 innings, as both starting pitchers (Joe Miller for Penn and Grant Kipp for Yale) kept each offense in check.

In the 4th, Yale jumped out in front on a three-run homer, but the Quakers began to claw back in the fifth on an RBI groundout from Tommy Courtney that scored fellow senior Craig Larsen. Yale got that run back shortly thereafter, then added three more in the bottom of the fifth.

Andrew Hernandez ripped his fourth RBI double of the weekend in the sixth, scoring Wyatt Henseler. Larsen followed with his third single of the game, driving in Hernandez.

Yale re-took a five-run lead in the seventh, then tacked on another in the eighth for the final run of the game.

How it Happened (Game 2)
The pitching trio of Cole Zaffiro, David Shoemaker and Owen Coady held the Bulldogs to no runs on just four hits, in a start-to-finish dominating performance.

Appel hit in the leadoff spot for the first time this season and started the game in style with a triple down the left field line. Henseler brought him home with an RBI groundout

With one out in the second, Cole Palis and Nate Polo walked ahead of Courtney, who singled to bring home Palis.

In the fourth, the Quakers tacked on another run via a Palis double and a Nate Polo RBI single. Shoemaker took over for Zaffiro in the fourth, and with two out and a runner on first, the southpaw picked off a runner to end the inning.

Heading into the 5th inning with a 3-0 lead, Henseler led things off with a double, and then Larsen brought him in with a two-out RBI single.

Coady relieved Shoemaker of his duties in the fifth, and the left-handed junior closed the game in style, giving up one hit over the final five frames, with three Bulldogs reaching base in all.
