Baseball Falls at Harvard, 4-3

CAMBRIDGE, Mass - The University of Pennsylvania baseball team dropped the finale of its Ivy League series with Harvard Sunday afternoon from O'Donnell Field, 4-3.

The teams played the first two games of the series last month, with Penn winning 27-6 and 6-2.

How it Happened
Penn (28-12, 14-4) got on the board in the first, taking advantage of an error on a ball of the bat of leadoff hitter Tommy Courtney. A walk and a fielder's choice later, Andrew Hernandez singled in Courtney.

A pitcher's duel broke out over the next several innings, with 10 of the next 17 batters through the bottom of the third going down on strikes.

Harvard (18-20, 9-9) tied the game in the fourth off Penn starter Kevin Eaise, the only run Eaise allowed in 3.1 innings of work while striking out five.

The two teams left a combined seven men on base through the top of the eighth, but neither team pushed the go-ahead run across until the bottom of the eighth when the Crimson put a three-spot on the board.

Penn did not go down without a furious rally in the ninth. Craig Larsen led off with a walk and Seth Werchan singled him to second, setting the stage for Nate Polo. Representing the tying run, the freshman drove in both Larsen and Werchan with a double to deep right field, advancing to third on the relay throw home.

That was as close as Penn would get, however, as a groundout, a pop out, and strikeout ended the game, denying Penn the chance at yet another conference sweep.

Quaker Notemeal
* Jackson Appel reached base safely for the 33rd consecutive game.

* Joe Miller became the first Quaker with 70 strikeouts in a season since Adam Bleday in 2017, moving into the top 10 on the program's single-season list.

* As a team, Penn struck out at least 10 batters for the 22nd time this season.
