Baseball Falls Late at Delaware, 6-5

NEWARK, Del. - The University of Pennsylvania baseball team dropped a wild 6-5 non-conference contest with Delaware Wednesday night from Bob Hannah Field.

How it Happened
Delaware (23-22) took advantage of two walks, a hit batsman and an error in the first to put a three-spot on the board with just one hit.

With two out and no one on in the third, Penn (28-13) loaded the bases on a Jackson Appel single and walks to Tommy Courtney and Andrew Hernandez. Next up stepped Ben Miller, who drove in Appel and Courtney with a base hit, cutting the deficit to 3-2. Delaware got one of those runs back in the bottom of the inning on another Penn error.

That score held into the seventh as Eli Trop, Seth DeVries and David Shoemaker threw a scoreless fourth, fifth, and sixth, respectively, for Penn; Trop escaped a bases-loaded, no-out threat in his clean inning, thanks in part to a great play by Appel behind the plate to end the inning.

In the Penn seventh, Hernandez got the Quakers back within a run with a double that plated Cole Palis, who had reached on an error to lead off the inning.

After Sam Bennett turned in a scoreless seventh, Wyatt Henseler tied the game with a home run to dead center leading off the eighth. In the Delaware eighth, the Blue Hens jumped right back in front with two more.

As they did in the third, Penn staged a bases-empty, two-out rally in the ninth. After Hernandez and Miller singled and each advanced a base on a passed ball, Henseler was intentionally walked to load the bases for pinch-hitter Carson Ozmer, who drew a walk, forcing home Hernandez.

With the tying run now 90 feet away and go-ahead run in scoring position, Delaware escaped with the win when Craig Larsen was called out on strikes on a full-count check-swing to end the game.

Quaker Notemeal
* Henseler's home run in the eighth tied the program's single-season record of 12, first set by Tom Olszak in 1979 and equaled by Will Davis in 2010. The home run also moved Henseler into second place for total bases in a single season (113), three behind Tom Grandieri's 116 in 2010.

* Appel reached base safely for the 34th consecutive game.

* Shoemaker lowered his ERA to 1.47 with his ninth scoreless outing of at least one inning of the season. Bryce Mangene also turned in his fourth straight scoreless outing of at least one inning.

Up Next
The Quakers will wrap the regular season with three games this weekend at Princeton. Penn needs one win to clinch a spot in the Ivy League Championship Series and remain in contention to host the series for the first time in more than 20 years.
