FULLERTON, Calif. – Penn Softball opened the 2022 Judi Garman Classic hosted by Cal State-Fullerton with a pair of losses. Penn fell 8-6 to Fresno State in the game one and then lost 5-1 to Seattle in game two.
Game 1 – Fresno State 8, Penn 6
The Bulldogs struck first with a two-run RBI base hit up the middle. They added another two runs in the top of the fourth inning to make it 4-0.
The bats were quiet during the first three innings drawing lead off walks in the first and second inning.
Corrie Phillips led off the bottom of the fourth inning with a base hit. Then
Dana Anderson came up to the plate and sent a ball over the left center fence to cut the lead in half, 4-2. Alyssa came in to pinch run for
Bella Fiorentino.
Julia Mortimer tied the game at 4-4 with a two-run shot.
After Fresno State took a one-run lead in the sixth,
Julia Schneider hit an RBI base hit to center to drive in
Ashley Waco to tie the game 5-5 in the bottom of the seventh as Penn was down to its final out.
Payton Bean came in to pitch the eight and allowed three runs to score on an RBI single and a two-run homer.
Laurel McKelvey came into pitch hit in the bottom of the eight and hit an RBI base hit to drive in Phillips from second to put the tying run on second. The Quaker rally would fall short giving Fresno State the extra inning, 8-6 victory.
Game 2 – Penn 1, Seattle 0
Penn opened the scoring early as Anderson grounded out to short to drive in J. Schneider on the play.
Bean made the start for Penn in game two and held Seattle hitless through the first 4.1 innings before a single to her gave them their first hit of the game.
The Redhwaks built on that moment as they loaded the bases on a couple of walks. Carley Nance hit a grand slam to break the game wide open as Penn was unable to respond. Seattle tacked on a run in the top of the seventh.
The Quakers are back on the diamond tomorrow for games against Cal Poly (3 p.m.) and Weber State (11 p.m.).
They will then play two at Cal Poly (March 9) before making the trip to Los Angeles for a pair of games at UCLA against Loyola Marymount and UCLA on March 10.
