PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The University of Pennsylvania softball team split its doubleheader on Saturday at Brown University. The Quakers took game one with a 7-2 victory and then the Bears used a five-run fourth today win game two 9-3.
GAME 1: Penn 7, Brown 2
Sarah Schneider led off the game with a double off the base of the right center wall. Two batters later,
Dana Anderson sent a long single off the top of the right center field wall to drive in the first run of the game.
In the bottom of the first,
Julia Longo struck out the first batter and walked the second. The next two batters both recorded base hits as the second hit drove in the runner on the second to tie the game at 1-1.
Julia Mortimer doubled to left with two outs to get a base runner for Penn in the top of the fourth. With the count 1-1,
Danica Larwill came in to pinch hit for
Sammy Fenton and saw three straight pitches to draw the walk. On the next batter,
Laurel McKelvey reached on an error by the shortstop that allowed Mortimer to score from second.
S. Schneider lead off the top of the fifth with a solo shot over the left field wall.
Penn tacked on a pair of runs in the sixth and seventh innings as it grew its lead to 7-1. IN the sixth inning, Penn used RBI base hits by
Laurel McKelvey and
Brianna Brown to take a 5-1 lead. In the seventh inning,
Ashley Waco came on as a pinch runner and scored on a no-out base hit to left field off the bat of Mortimer. McKelvey added another run for Penn as she sent an RBI base hit to right to score
Bella Fiorentino from third.
Julia Longo went the distance for Penn as she allowed two runs on seven hits while striking out five and walking three.
GAME 2: Brown 9, Penn 3
Penn kept the momentum going to start game two as Fiorentino laced a two-out two-RBI double down the left field line. The bats then went cold as the Brown pitching sent down 13-straight Penn batters from the final out of the first inning to the first out of the top of the sixth.
The Bears used a trio of innings putting up crooked numbers on the board. They tied the game at 2-2 in the third and then built their largest lead with five runs in the fourth innings. Brown added two more runs in the sixth to take a 9-2 lead.
Julia Schneider hit a solo home run in her final at bat of the game as she attempted to start a rally in the seventh.
Penn pitching struggled in the fourth as three pitchers were used.
Payton Bean made the start as she pitched to one batter in the fourth inning allowing three runs on five hits.
Olivia Szewczyk came in in relief of Bean in the fourth and faced just four batters as she allowed four runs, one earned, on no hits while walking two.
Rachel Riley was the third Penn pitcher to pitch in the fourth inning as she closed out the game allowing two runs on three hits and had Penn's only two strikeouts.
Quaker Notemeal
- Penn hit two home runs on Saturday brining its total to eight in its past seven games as Sarah Schneider hit a solo shot in the fifth inning of game one and Julia Schneider hit a solo shot in seventh inning of game two.
- Longo went the distance in game one pitching seven innings allowing two runs on seven hits while striking out five and walking three in game one.
