Softball Falls to Norfolk State 6-5 on Sunday

NORFOLK, Va. – Penn Softball played a hard-fought game against Norfolk State on the final day of the Battle at the Bay Tournament. Over the course of the tournament, Penn went 2-3 picking up wins on the first two days. In its final game the Quakers were unable to keep a rally going in the final frame as they fell 6-5 to NSU.  
 
The Spartans picked up a first inning lead following a double down the left field line to score the game's opening run. Bella Fiorentino was brought in in with two out in the first inning to relieve a struggling ­Rachel Riley.
 
Penn was unable to muster up anything in the first two inning as the first six Quakers were sent back to the dugout.
 
The Quakers took a 2-1 lead in the top of third inning as Fiorentino helped her own cause as she tied it up on a solo shot over the left field fence. Corrie Phillips scored a go ahead RBI for Penn as she drive in Madison Bauerle.
 
Brianna Brown ripped an RBI triple down the left field line driving in Fiorentino from first for a 3-1 Penn lead.
 
The bottom of the fourth inning turned ugly quick for Penn as Norfolk State touched the Quakers for three runs and a 4-3 lead.
 
Penn responded in the sixth inning with a run as it capitalized on an error by the NSU defense.
 
NSU then responded with two runs in the bottom of the six to take a six four lead into the seventh inning.
 
Sarah Schneider opened the top of the seventh with a base hit to right that skipped of the right fielders glove and allowed her to go to third on the play. Julia Schneider walked and then got caught stealing but in the process, S. Schneider scored the fifth Quaker run. Penn's rally would come to an end as the next two batters went down swinging.
 
The Quakers will return to Philly before getting ready to make a spring break trip out west to California. The 11-game California swing will begin with seven games at the Judi Garmen Classic (March 4-8) hosted by Cal State – Fullerton. They will then play two at Cal Poly (March 9) before making the trip to Los Angeles for a pair of games at UCLA against Loyola Marymount and UCLA on March 10.
