Men's and Women's Fencing Each Post Pair of Top 20 Wins at Temple Invitational

PHILADELPHIA – The University of Pennsylvania's men's and women's fencing teams hit the strips for one final NCAA tune-up on Sunday at the Temple Invitational. The women picked up three wins in five matches, including two victories over top 15 teams in the United States Fencing Coaches Association (USFCA) poll; the men finished the day with a pair of top 20 wins.

The women opened their day with a dominant 22-5 win over No. 20 Johns Hopkins, the sabreists and foilists each coming away with eight wins in nine bouts. A 17-10 win over St. John's followed, highlighted by a 7-2 performance from the foil group. The Quakers added a 15-12 win over host Temple, No. 14 in the USFCA poll,#14 sandwiched the win over Temple between dropped matches to Penn State and Princeton. The foil group finished the day 5-0, while the sabre group finished the day 4-1.

On the men's side, the Quakers opened the day with an 18-9 win over No. 20 Johns Hopkins, winning five of the nine sabre bouts, six of the nine epee bouts, and seven of the nine foil bouts.

After dropping close matches to St. John's and Penn State to close the morning session, the Quakers closed the day's action in the afternoon with a win over No. 11 Stevens and a loss to Princeton. In the match against Stevens, the foil team picked up seven wins in nine bouts, one of three seven-win performances on Sunday from the male foilists.
