SAN DIEGO – One day after knocking off the #1 team in the field, the University of Pennsylvania men's tennis doubles team of
Edoardo Graziani and
Kevin Zhu dropped their Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) National Fall Championships quarterfinal match Friday evening.
After picking up a 6-3, 6-2 win over the LSU team of Stefan Latinovic and Nick Watson on Wednesday, Graziani and Zhu won a thrilling Round of 16 match on Thursday. After taking the opening set 7-6 (5) off the University of Texas' Cleeve Harper and Eliot Spizzirri, the Penn duo dropped the second set 3-6, setting up a third-set superbreaker to determine the match winner. Facing two match points at 7-9, Graziani and Zhu rallied to tie the break at 9-all before ultimately winning 15-13.
On Friday, facing the Baylor team of Finn Bass and Juan Pablo Grassi Mazzuchi, the Quakers dropped the opening set 4-6, then roared back to take the second set 6-1, setting up another superbreaker. With Penn down just one point at 3-4, Baylor reeled off six of the final eight points to close out the match 10-5.
Friday's loss wraps the Fall portion of Penn's schedule. The team is slated to commence with their Spring schedule in January, seeking to return to the NCAA Tournament for the second consecutive year.
