Men's Soccer Battles Cornell For First Place In Ivy League Saturday

PHILADELPHIA – First place in the Ivy League is on the line Saturday afternoon when the University of Pennsylvania men's soccer team battles #15/16 Cornell in a matchup of the only 2-0-0 teams in conference play.

Penn will arrive in Ithaca winners of seven straight for the first time in 50 years. The men's soccer program has not won seven consecutive matches since the end of the 1975/start of the 1976 seasons and has not done so within the same season since the 1972 Ivy League championship team.

The Series with Cornell
The Quakers own a 59-34-14 all-time advantage over the Big Red, including a 24-17-6 mark in road contests, though Cornell did pick up a 3-0 win in last season's conference opener. Penn has not dropped consecutive matches in the series since 2011 and 2012.

About Cornell
The Big Red's six-match win streak was snapped Tuesday night against Colgate, a streak that included five one-goal victories including a 2-1 road win over then-#7 Syracuse.

Brandon Morales leads Cornell with six goals and 15 points, but has scored just twice in the team's last five matches. Alioune Ka has missed each of the last four matches, but remains second on the team with four goals and 10 points. Emeka Eneli and Connor Drought are fist and second on the team in assists with six and five, respectively.

Ryan Friedberg has played all but 11:50 in net, posting a 0.83 goals-against average and a .710 save percentage along with a trio of shutouts.

Quaker Notemeal
* The Quakers picked up their seventh straight victory over Monmouth Tuesday night, moving to 8-1-1. Penn has now won eight matches in a single season for the first time since 2013.

* The last Quaker team to win eight of its first 10 matches was the 2010 Ivy League championship team that started the season 11-2.

* Penn ended Monmouth's three-match win streak on Tuesday night and became the first team to score on the Hawks in their last four matches.

*Ben Stitz scored for the seventh straight match, notching his eighth and ninth goals of the season, the first Quaker to hit that mark since Alec Neumann had nine in 2016. One more goal would make him the first player with at least 10 in a season since Steven Marcinkiewicz had 12 in 1995.

* Stas Korzeniowski, scoreless in his last three matches, finished the night with three points, giving him 17 for the season, one back of Stitz for the team lead.

* The Red and Blue picked up a second straight shutout win for the first time since October 22 and 26, 2019 against Drexel and Yale, respectively. The last time Penn won three straight matches via shutout came between the last match of 2018 and first two of 2019; the last such streak within a single season was 2010, when Penn won five straight via shutout.

* Nick Christoffersen posted his third shutout of the season and lowered his season goals-against average to 0.603. That ranks him ranking 15th among all D-1 keepers.

*During head coach Brian Gill's four seasons to date, Penn has held 44 of its 58 opponents to one goal or fewer. Additionally, after scoring three goals or more in just five of Gill's first 48 matches as head coach, Penn has hit that mark five times in its 10 matches this season.
