PHILADELPHIA – The University of Pennsylvania's men's and women's fencing teams wrapped the Philadelphia Invitational Sunday afternoon each with a quartet of matches against some of the best teams in the country.
Facing four teams in the top 20 of the United States Fencing Coaches Association (USFCA) poll, multiple weapon groups from both teams found success throughout the day.
The men's team opened the day with a 15-12 win over #10 Ohio State, while the women's team closed the day with a 14-13 win over #10 Northwestern. The men's sabreists took six of nine bouts from the Buckeyes with the foilists coming away with five wins in their nine bouts. The women's sabreists took seven bouts from the Wildcats, tying for their most bout wins over a single opponent all weekend.
Following the men's team win over the Buckeyes, the epeeists took six of nine bouts from Notre Dame, #2 in the USFCA poll. In the subsequent match against #1 Columbia, the sabreists came away with six wins while the epeeists added five more of their own. Leading up to the win over Northwestern, the women's epeeists had themselves a da, opening with six bout wins over Ohio State, adding five more bout wins against #1 Notre Dame, then coming away with seven wins against Temple.
With the margin for error razor-thin all day long, all eight matches for the Quakers ended 16-11 or closer, with the men falling one bout short of knocking off Columbia.
