The Series with UIC
The Quakers and the Flames are meeting for the first time in women's soccer.
About UIC
The Flames, who play in the Horizon League, are 0-2-1 and still looking for their first goal this season, sandwiching losses to Wake Forest (1-0) and DePaul (3-0) around a 0-0 draw with Minnesota.
The Series with Hofstra
The Quakers and the Pride have played twice before, most recently in 2019 when Hofstra pinned a 2-1 loss on Penn at Rhodes Field. The first meeting, also played in Philadelphia, was a 1-0 Penn win during the 2006 season.
About Hofstra
The Pride are defending Colonial Athletic Association regular-season champions and enter the weekend 3-1-0 and ranked 25th nationally in the United Soccer Coaches (USC) poll. With a match at Columbia in hand for Thursday, Hofstra has already beaten one Ivy opponent this season as they blitzed defending champion Brown 4-0 last Friday. The only loss came two days later at national #7 ranked Penn State, 2-1.
Quaker Notemeal
*With the 2020 season canceled due to Ivy League regulations regarding the worldwide COVID-19 pandemic, when Penn took the field at Temple last Friday night the Quakers were playing their first intercollegiate match since November 9, 2019—a span of 657 days.
*After being named the Douglas N. Brush Head Coach of Women's Soccer in March 2020—just before the pandemic hit—
Casey Brown finally got her first win as Penn's head coach on Sunday when the Quakers beat George Mason, 2-1.
*For the second time in as many matches, Penn gave up the first goal against George Mason but quickly drew level in the first half before getting the winner in the second.
*Junior
Sizzy Lawton assisted both goals Sunday, feeding sophomore
Lauren Teuschl for the first goal—just 2:42 after Mason had gone up—and then hitting senior
Mia Shenk for the winner in the 70th minute.
*In her collegiate debut Friday at Temple, sophomore
Ginger Fontenot scored Penn's goal in the 1-1 draw with the Owls as she finished Teuschl's free kick in the 68th minute.
*Lawton was a constant threat on Friday, taking six shots and putting five on target including one that rang the post in the first half when it was still 0-0. Fontenot had four shots, while junior
Miranda Farman and freshman
Janae Stewart had three each.
*Sophomore
Laurence Gladu has started the first two matches in goal, making six saves so far this season.
*Penn named three captains for the 2021 season. Senior
JoJo Cotto and juniors
Emily Pringle and
Peyton Raun lead the Quakers.
*Raun is one of two players who received honorable mention All-Ivy recognition in 2019, the other being Lawton.
*Lawton scored three goals in 2019 and is one of just three players on the roster who scored a goal that season; the others are seniors Shenk (2) and
Jackie Bruder (1).
*A reminder that the four-year seniors on the team—Bruder, Cotto, Shenk,
Abbey Duncan,
Lucy Kellogg and
Allie Schachter—were members of Penn's last Ivy League championship squad, in 2018.
