The Series with Temple
The Quakers and the Owls resume a city rivalry that has been played 13 times previously, with Penn holding an 8-5 lead in the series. In fact, the Red and Blue have won eight of the last nine meetings, including a 2-1 decision on Rhodes Field in 2019. Prior to that, the teams had not played since 2015.
About Temple
The Owls are 0-1-0, the loss coming 3-0 at Maryland on August 19. Temple was scheduled to play Rutgers last Sunday but that match was postponed.
The Series with George Mason
The Quakers and the Patriots are meeting for the tenth time overall but just the second time since 2011. The first came in 2017, when GMU defeated Penn 2-0. This is the first meeting in Philadelphia since 2009, coincidentally the last time Penn beat Mason (3-1).
About Mason
The Patriots opened play with a pair of matches last weekend, falling at Delaware (2-1) and at home to Maryland (2-0). Shannon Lee had Mason's goal against the Blue Hens, converting a penalty kick.
Quaker Notemeal
*With the 2020 season being canceled due to Ivy League regulations regarding the worldwide COVID-19 pandemic, when Penn takes the field on North Broad on Friday they will be playing an intercollegiate match for the first time since November 9, 2019—a span of 657 days.
*After being named the Douglas N. Brush Head Coach of Women's Soccer in March 2020—just before the pandemic hit—
Casey Brown finally gets to coach the Quakers in actual matches this weekend.
*Penn named three captains for the 2021 season on Wednesday night. Senior
JoJo Cotto and juniors
Emily Pringle and
Peyton Raun will lead the Quakers this season.
*Raun is one of two players who received honorable mention All-Ivy recognition in 2019, the other being her classmate
Sizzy Lawton.
*Lawton scored three goals in 2019 and is one of just three players on the roster who scored a goal that season; the others are seniors
Mia Shenk (2) and
Jackie Bruder (1).
*The Quakers have eight players on this year's roster who saw time in at least 10 matches in 2019.
*A reminder that the four-year seniors on the team—Bruder, Cotto, Shenk,
Abbey Duncan,
Lucy Kellogg and
Allie Schachter—were members of Penn's last Ivy League championship squad, in 2018.
*None of Penn's three goalkeepers have played a minute for the Quakers heading into the 2021 season. The competition between the pipes features junior
Maggie Robinson, sophomore
Laurence Gladu and freshman
Alli Lester.
