PHILADELPHIA – It was a day to remember for former University of Pennsylvania pitcher Jake Cousins SEAS '17. He received the phone call that every baseball player dreams about, as the Milwaukee Brewers selected him to their active roster from Triple-A Nashville.
A 20th-round pick in the 2017 MLB Draft by the Washington Nationals, Cousins is enjoying his most successful year playing professionally. Cousins is 1-0 with a 2.08 ERA in eight appearances for the Nashville Sounds of MiLB. He has fanned 16 hitters in eight innings and issued just two walks in AAA.
Milwaukee made the move looking to bolster its bullpen ahead of a three-game series on the road against the Arizona Diamondbacks that gets underway this evening.
As a senior, Cousins garnered first-team All-Ivy recognition after compiling a 7-2 record and a 3.15 ERA as the ace of the Quakers' pitching staff. During his last spring as a Quaker, he reached 20 career wins on the bump to rank third on Penn's all-time wins list.
Over his four years in University City, Cousins went 20-7 with a 2.91 ERA in just under 200 innings of work. He was a three-time All-Ivy honoree with six complete games and a pair of shutouts to his name.
Cousins is looking to become the 86th former Quaker to appear in the majors and just the 25th pitcher. He is looking to become the first Penn pitcher toe the rubber in an MLB game since Steve Adkins ENG'86 played for the New York Yankees in 1990.
