Men's Track and Field

Quakers Adjust Record Book In Successful Day At Philly Mets

PHILADELPHIA – The University of Pennsylvania men's and women's track and field programs competed in the Philadelphia Metropolitan Collegiate Invitational presented by Toyota on Saturday at Franklin Field, as the Quakers reeled in countless victories and 11 performances that ranked in the top 10 in program history.

On the women's side, Penn had six performances the moved individuals either into the program's top 10 list or higher on it. Senior captain Camille Dickson was a part of three of those performances, including topping her program record in the long jump with a new mark of 6.24 meters (20'5.75").

Dickson was a part of two relays as well that moved into the top 10. In the 4x400, Dickson, Skyla Wilson, Isabella Whittaker, and Uchechi Nwogwugwu put together a time of 3:39.57 for the ninth-best time in program history, as they took second place in the event. The other event was the sprint medley relay that saw Dickson, Nwogwugwu, Katherine Muccio, and Melissa Tanaka combine for a time of 3:55.69 for third place while moving into fourth in program history.

In individual events, the Quakers had two hurdlers make moves in the record book. Grace O'Shea secured a second-place finish in the 100m hurdles with a time of 13.98, good enough to lock in a spot at sixth in program history. In the 400m hurdles, Haley Rizek narrowly edged out teammate Wilson, who holds the program record, to win the event with a time of 59.62 to move her up to third in program history. Out at throws, Omonye Osezua cracked the top 10 in program history in the hammer throw, reaching 48.61m (159'5").

The Quaker women had plenty of top finishes as well, including the 4x800 relay victory by Fabianna Szorenyi, Ellen Byrnes, Nikhila Obbineni, and Caroline O'Sullivan with a time of 9:04.47. Tamara Grahovac continued her dominance in the triple jump, nearly hitting a personal best mark at 12.19m (40').

Out at throws, Ashley Anumba earned another victory in the discus, winning with a mark of 55.99m (183'8") to move into the top 15 in the country this season. With her impressive distance, she was named the Female Field Athlete of the Day.

On the men's side, Chudi Ikpeazu secured a victory in the discus as well, reaching 58.42m (191'8") to move into second in program history while the distance sits top 10 in the nation this season. His effort earned him the Male Field Athlete of the Day honor. More record book action happened later in the meet during the 3,000m steeplechase and the 10,000m.

In the steeplechase, the Quakers took the top three finishes led by Michael Keehan with what was named the Moment of the Meet, cruising to a time of 8:48.54 to move into sixth in program history and a mark that places him top 10 in Division I this season. Keehan was followed closely in by William Hare, who moved himself into ninth in program history with a time of 8:51.45.

The day wrapped up with the men's 10k, seeing Anthony Russo take a second-place finish with a time that was nearly a minute better than his personal record. Crossing the finish line at 28:57.20, he moved his way up to second in program history. He was joined at the finish line by Zubeir Dagane with a time of 29:53.75 to sit at ninth in program history.

The men added several other top finishes including a comeback victory in the 4x400 relay by Alex Ruhl, Emerson Douds, Antaures Jackson, and Robbie Ruppel with a time of 3:12.16.

Individually, Justin Iler held strong in the 5,000m to edge out two Villanova competitors on the home stretch with a time of 14:22.62. In the 110m hurdles, Enoch Cheung pulled out a tight battle for a time of 14.68 and the win. On the infield, the Quakers secured the top three spots in the pole vault, seeing Scott Toney take the victory with a clearance of 4.85m (15'11") while teammates Caleb Johnson (4.70m) and Demetri Whitsett (4.55m) came in second and third, respectively.

Out at throws, Olatide Abinusawa and Ben Kioko continued their success in their respective events. Abinusawa secured a victory in the shot put with a distance of 15.79m (51'9.75"), while Kioko won in the javelin with a mark of 60.28m (197'9").
