COLUMBUS – The University of Pennsylvania's men's and women's fencing teams wrapped a busy day of competition in their second event of the season Sunday from the Ohio State Elite Invitational. The women finished 4-1 including a win over the host Buckeyes while the men picked up a pair of wins over Air Force and Wayne State.
The women started the day with three dominating wins, knocking off Air Force (20-7), UC San Diego (19-8) and Wayne State (23-4); the foil and epee teams each went 22-5 over the first three bouts. After stumbling against Notre Dame, falling 18-9, the Quakers ended the day with an 18-9 win over the host Buckeyes, with each weapon group winning 6-3.
On the men's side, much like the women had done, the Quakers kicked off the day with a victory over Air Force (17-10). A 16-11 loss to UC San Diego was followed by a 22-5 win over Wayne State; the sabre team went 3-0 in the morning/early afternoon session. Following the mid-event break, the Quakers closed out the day with 16-11 and 18-9 losses to Notre Dame and the host Buckeyes, highlighted by a 7-2 win in epee against the Fighting Irish and a 5-4 win in foil over Ohio State.
Both teams will return to action January 16 for the Penn State Invitational.
