Fagan's Pair Of Goals Secure Field Hockey's 2-0 Shutout Over Temple

PHILADELPHIA – The University of Pennsylvania field hockey team secured its second straight shutout victory on Sunday at Ellen Vagelos Field, defeating Temple, 2-0.

Senior captain Maddy Fagan scored both goals in the game against a Temple squad that defeated No. 20 UConn on Friday at home. The win moved the Quakers to 8-7 for the season, while the Owls shift to 8-10.

Quaker Notemeal
*Fagan's two goals were the first of the season and tied a career-best mark for her collegiate career. She scored two goals in a single game twice in the 2019 season, in a 5-2 win against Cornell and a 4-3 victory over Dartmouth.

*Allison Kuzyk and Meghan Ward each were credited with an assist in the game. It's Kuzyk's first collegiate helper, while Ward marked her third of the season for her team-leading 13th point.

*The shutout is the second straight and fourth this season. It's the first time since the 2018 season that Quakers recorded back-to-back shutouts, defeating Yale, 2-0, and Brown, 1-0, in late October.

*Sabien Paumen earned her fourth shutout in the cage and her eighth win of the season, making three saves through 60 minutes of play.

*The Owls outshot Penn in the contest, 7-6, but the Quakers placed five of their six shots on target while only three were toward the cage for Temple.

How It Happened
The first quarter didn't see much offensive action, with the only two shots happening by Temple in the final minute of the frame.

The action started up for Penn in the second quarter off back-to-back shots by senior captain Gracyn Banks and Julia Russo. By the 28th minute, the ball finally found the back of the cage. Ward found room on the right side of the circle, sending a pass in front of the keeper where Kuzyk redirected on target. A save by the Temple keeper deflected the ball to the back post where Fagan sent it into the goal for her first finish of the season.

Carrying a 1-0 lead into the break, Paumen was finally tested at the beginning of the second half when a shot was fired off in the 34th minute. The sliding save on the left side was the first of her three critical saves of the game.

Minutes later, the Quaker defense quickly moved the ball up front to a transitioning Ward. With room down the left side of the field, Ward pushed the ball all the way to the left side of the cage where she sent a quick pass to the other side for Fagan to send in the second goal of the game.

The Owls only had one more attempt offensively in the closing 20 minutes, which Paumen turned away to hold onto the clean sheet.
