LYNCHBURG, VA. – The University of Pennsylvania softball team (1-1) turned in a season-opening split, defeating Butler (9-4) 1-0 in the opener and falling to Liberty (5-11) 8-1 in the nightcap. The Quakers delivered a season-opening victory for the first time since 2017.
Quaker Notemeal
- Jennifer Brann tallied her first complete game shutout since her perfect game on April 21, 2019 against Brown.

- Lucy Yang hit a home run in the 4th inning against Butler, becoming the first Quaker to hit a home run in a season opener since Brandi King in 2004 against Rider.
- Sarah Schneider (2-for-4, RBI) tallied her first collegiate hit and RBI in the loss to Liberty.
How It Happened
The Quakers kicked off the season on a frigid morning in Virginia with a strong collective victory against Butler. In a game that featured just two hits from the Red and Blue and six total hits in the game, the Quakers leaned on the pitching effort of
Jennifer Brann and the solo home run from
Lucy Yang.
Brann was in command from the start, holding the Butler bats in check. A first inning double play set the tone for a dominant showing by the senior, who allowed just four hits and one walk, while striking out over 117 pitches. Brann did not require much run support, as
Laurel McKelvey's season opening single and Yang's home run were enough to support the victory.
In the nightcap, the Quakers went toe-to-toe against Liberty for the first two innings, with
Sarah Schneider turning in a big night in her first collegiate start at catcher. Schneider went 2-for-4 and roped an RBI single into left field to tie the game at 1-1.
Kayla Ketring also tallied a multi-hit game, but a grand slam from Liberty's Autumn Bishop was enough to propel the Flames to an insurmountable lead.
What's Next
The Quakers continue their play at the Liberty Classic with day two as they play two more games on Saturday. The Quakers open the day against Hofstra at 1 p.m. and follow that with a game against Elon at 5 p.m.
