LYNCHBURG, VA. – The University of Pennsylvania softball team (3-1) turned in a day two sweep, beating Hofstra (2-9) 6-1 in the opener, before defeating Elon (9-7) 9-1 in five innings to cap off the day. At 3-1, the Quakers are off to their best start since 2011 (5-1).
Quaker Notemeal
- Jennifer Brann tallied her second consecutive 7.0 IP complete game victory in the win against Hofstra. That is the first time she's accomplished that in her collegiate career.
- Brann (140) tallied four strikeouts against Hofstra and needs just 16 more strikeouts to tie Mikenzie Voves (156) for ninth on the all-time strikeout list.
- Kayla Ketring has now notched a hit in three consecutive games after going hitless in the opener.
- Emma Nedley (3) delivered a bases-clearing triple in the win against Elon. She needs just one more triple to move into a tie for eighth on the Quakers all-time triples list.
- Nedley's three RBI are the single game high for the Quakers this season and the most by a Quaker since Sarah Cwiertnia and Lucy Yang against Princeton on April 13, 2019.
How It Happened
After shaking off any early season rust, the Quakers bats came to play in this one. After just two runs and seven hits on day one, the Quakers exploded for 15 runs and 16 hits.
Sarah Ketring wasted little time getting
Jennifer Brann some run support, driving in a run in the second inning and the Red and Blue never looked back.
The Quakers chiseled away at the Pride from the very beginning, with an
Emma Nedley RBI sacrifice fly, followed by RBI singles from
Jennifer Brann and
Laurel McKelvey to take a 4-0 lead.
Sarah Schneider continued the strong start to her collegiate career, driving in a run on an RBI single and then stealing home to give the Quakers their fifth and sixth runs of the game.
In the nightcap, the bats acted in stark contrast to the chilly weather, as the Red and Blue blitzed the Elon pitching staff for nine runs. Much like in game one,
Sarah Schneider drove in a run on an RBI single and then scored on a passed ball. The game really broke open in the fifth inning, as
Lucy Yang tallied an RBI single before Nedley cleared the bases with an RBI triple.
Clare Sebastianelli ended the game early with a booming double to left-center field to score Nedley.
What's Next
The Quakers wrap up play at the Liberty Classic with a game against Fairfield on Sunday, March 1 at 12:30 p.m. Following the game, the Quakers will return to prepare for the home opener against Lafayette on March 4.
