LYNCHBURG, VA. – The University of Pennsylvania softball team (3-2) dropped the finale of the Liberty Classic to Fairfield (2-7) on Sunday. The loss completes a 3-2 run at the Liberty Classic, with wins over Butler, Hofstra and Elon.
Quaker Notemeal
- Jennifer Brann (148) tallied eight strikeouts against Hofstra and needs just eight more strikeouts to tie Mikenzie Voves (156) for ninth on the all-time strikeout list.
- Brann owns three hits in three games, after recording only two total at-bats last season (while almost exclusively pitching).
- Lucy Yang went 2-for-3 with 2 RBI and a double in the loss. Yang has driven in at least one run each game she has record a hit.
- Bella Fiorentino recorded her first collegiate hit, going 1-for-2 with a BB in the loss.
How It Happened
It appeared as if the Quakers were on pace for another win, scoring first against the Stags. After a
Jennifer Brann single,
Kayla Ketring was able to reach on an error and steal second base, setting the table for
Lucy Yang. Yang delivered a big, two-run double for her second hit of the day to put the Red and Blue in front.
However, the Stags were able to chip away at the Quakers lead, beginning with a two-run response in the third inning. Fairfield was able to jump in front for good in the fifth inning, as a fielding error allowed a run to score, making it 3-2. An RBI single the same inning provided a cushion for the Stags.
In a game filled with bizarre plays and sequences, the game also had a noticeable oddity in that every run scored was unearned. Four errors between the two teams allowed runners to get on base and ultimately score.
What's Next
The Quakers will return home to prepare for the home opener against Lafayette on Wednesday, March 4. The two teams will play a doubleheader, beginning at 3:00 p.m.
