Ashley Anumba, Sam Mattis Continue T&F's International Success

PHILADELPHIA – The University of Pennsylvania track & field program continued its excellence on the international stage in the past month with junior Ashley Anumba competing at the 2019 African Games for Nigeria and alumnus Sam Mattis – the 2019 USATF Outdoor champion – represented Team USA for the first time in The Match.

Anumba finished fourth in the women's discus for Nigeria, recording a best throw of 53.45m, hosted at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium in Morocco. Nigeria eventually captured the African Games title, compiling 23 medals, including 10 gold medals – tied for the most of any nation.

After two years at Penn, Anumba holds the program record in the discus, is a two-time honorable mention All-America and an Ivy League champion. When she won the Ivy title in 2018, she was named the Ivy League Co-Most Outstanding Field Performer as a freshman.

At The Match, Sam Mattis also placed fourth in the men's discus, launching a best mark of 63.66m in Minsk, Belarus.

The Match is an international competition pitting Europe against the U.S. three weeks prior to the IAAF World Athletics Championships. Mattis is already locked in to World's after capturing the USATF title back in July with a mark of 66.69m.

Mattis, a 2016 Penn graduate and former NCAA champion, will now prepare for World's, set for Sept. 28 in Doha, Qatar.
