Scafidi, Hood Honors Headline Eight Baseball All-Ivy Selections

PHILADELPHIA – The Ivy League has released its All-Ivy teams for the 2019 baseball season and the University of Pennsylvania was well represented, totaling eight honorees.

Headlining the selections are junior Christian Scafidi, who was named Ivy League Pitcher of the Year, and Josh Hood who was unanimously voted Ivy League Rookie of the Year.

Penn led the Ivies with four first-team honorees, including unanimous selections Scafidi and Matt O'Neill, as well as fellow first-team selections Hood and Peter Matt. Chris Adams, Craig Larsen and Sean Phelan represented the Quakers' three second-team selections, while Eduardo Malinowski was Penn's lone honorable mention.

Notes to Know…
  • Scafidi is Penn's sixth Ivy League Pitcher of the Year and first since Paul Cusick in 2011.
  • Penn has produced three of the last four Ivy League Rookies of the Year after Hood's unanimous selection this year. Eduardo Malinowski (2018) and Matt O'Neill (2016) are Penn's previous two honorees.
  • Penn's eight All-Ivy selections are the Quakers' most since tallying 10 honorees in 2010.
  • The Quakers lead the Ivy League with four first-team selections.

Christian Scafidi – Ivy League Pitcher of the Year; Unanimous First-Team All-Ivy
Scafidi cemented his place in Penn's starting rotation at the start of the season and seemed to improve with each outing as the Quakers started Ivy League play. Against Ancient Eight opponents, Scafidi posted a 4-1 record after seven appearances and six starts and led Ivy League starting pitchers with a conference-low 2.16 ERA. After starting Ivy League play with a loss against Harvard—his only loss of the season—Scafidi locked in, posting a 4-0 record across 45.2 innings pitched with 40 strikeouts, eight walks, and just four earned runs allowed in his final six appearances. Scafidi pitched at least seven innings in five of those six appearances, including a complete game against Cornell (April 27). The junior captain finished the season leading the Quakers in innings pitched (68.2), strikeouts (59), wins (6), and ERA (2.62).

Josh Hood – Unanimous Ivy League Rookie of the Year; First-Team All-Ivy
One of five players to start all 41 games for the Quakers, Hood came in and made an immediate impact during his freshman year. The shortstop closed out the season with 42 RBI and 60 hits with a .331 batting average. Hood especially locked in during conference play. In Penn's second Ivy League game of the season—a 16-12 win over Harvard—Hood went 4-for-5 with five RBI, three runs scored, two doubles, and two home runs. This would set the tone for the freshman during the remainder of the season. All of Hood's team-leading eight home runs came during Ivy League play, and the freshman led the Quakers with 28 RBI against the Ivies. Ten of his 17 multi-hit games, including three four-hit performances, came against conference opponents, while eight of his team-leading 12 multi-RBI games also came during Ivy League play.

Matt O'Neill – Unanimous First-Team All-Ivy
A leader on and off the diamond, O'Neill had a career year in his senior season. The captain started 40 of Penn's 41 games with 31 starts behind the dish and nine as a designated hitter. O'Neill led the Ivy League with a .405 batting average and finished third in the conference with 64 hits. Even when not hitting the ball the captain made the most out of his plate appearances, finishing the season with a .527 on-base percentage—good for sixth-best in the nation—and drew a program-record 40 walks. The senior finished the season third on the team with 40 RBI and tied for third on the team with 41 runs scored. O'Neill came through when it counted most, posting an Ivy League-leading .412 batting average in conference play with 35 hits, 21 RBI, and 18 runs scored. Behind the dish, O'Neill continued to assert himself as one of the nation's best catchers as he led the Ivy League with 13 baserunners caught stealing.

Peter Matt – First-Team All-Ivy
A constant force in right field, Matt followed up last year's second-team All-Ivy honor with a first-team selection after career numbers in every statistical category except home runs. The junior closed out the season tied for second on the team with 64 hits and led the Ivy League with 46 runs scored. Matt tied the program record for triples in a season after an Ivy League-leading six three-baggers. The New York native proved his prowess on the basepaths as he led the team with 14 steals and came up with timely hits to tally 35 RBI. Aside from his abilities with a bat, Matt asserted himself as one of the best outfielders in the league. In right field, he posted a perfect 1.000 fielding percentage with 97 putouts and made third-base coaches rue the decision to wave baserunners on as Matt hosed them down to tally seven assists.

Chris Adams – Second-Team All-Ivy
Despite missing most of March due to injury, Adams returned in time for Penn's Ivy League series against Dartmouth to serve as a key contributor in the Quakers' Ivy League title chase. In his 25 games played, Adams posted a .371 batting average with 39 hits, 16 RBI, and 19 runs scored. The second baseman ranked sixth on the team with 26 hits in his 15 Ivy League starts and finished with Penn's third-best batting average (.377) against the Ancient Eight.

Craig Larsen – Second-Team All-Ivy
Another key member of Penn's electric freshman class, Larsen filled in at first base, second base, and left field to make an immediate impact for the Quakers. The New Jersey native was never shy to come up with a big hit as he closed out his freshman campaign with 56 hits and 44 RBI, the most RBI by a Penn freshman in program history. Of his six home runs, three were grand slams. In Penn's 21-inning game against Dartmouth (April 6) he became the first Penn player to hit for the cycle in over 10 years after going 5-for-12 with two doubles, a triple, a grand slam, and a bunt single. Larsen was the only player in the Ivies to be named Player of the Week and Rookie of the Week in the same week after going 11-for-25 with 12 RBI and 10 runs scored over a midweek game against Saint Joseph's and a weekend series against Dartmouth.

Sean Phelan – Second-Team All-Ivy
Penn's program-record holder in starts (167) and appearances (168), Phelan closed out his historic career with a bang. The senior led the Ivy League with 65 hits in the regular season and ranked fourth in the league with a .363 batting average. His 0.44 doubles-per-game average is the ninth-best average in the nation and he finished the season leading the Ivy League with 18 doubles. A two-time All-Ivy selection, Phelan's legacy will live on in the record books as the senior finished his career with the second-most hits (200) and the third-most doubles (47) in program history.

Eduardo Malinowski – Honorable Mention All-Ivy
Despite missing a third of Penn's Ivy League games, Malinowski stuffed his stat sheet to earn his second consecutive All-Ivy selection. Last year's Ivy League Rookie of the Year one-upped his freshman campaign with career highs in runs (32), doubles (8), triples (5), home runs (4), and RBI (27) despite playing nine fewer games than he did in 2018. Malinowski's .354 batting average—a career high—ranked fifth on the team while his .585 slugging percentage—another career high—was the third-best on the team.
