Men's Basketball Makes Final Push This Weekend vs. Yale, Brown

PHILADELPHIA – The University of Pennsylvania men's basketball team remains in the running for the fourth and final spot in the 2019 Ivy League Tournament, to take place next weekend in New Haven, Conn. The Quakers are a game behind fourth-place Brown and tied with Cornell for fifth place with one final weekend of Ivy play ahead.

The various scenarios? Honestly, way too many to mention here. (Try this page on the Ivy League website.) The good news for the Quakers is that they face Brown on Saturday in the regular-season finale, with the distinct possibility that a Tournament berth goes to the winner. That said, there are still games to be played on Friday and Penn will face Ivy co-leader Yale that night at 7 p.m. (Brown is at Princeton that night, while Cornell hosts Harvard on Friday before closing with Dartmouth on Saturday.)

Both of this weekend's games will air through ESPN+. Prior to Saturday's game with Brown, the Penn program will honor six players ahead of their final home game: Jackson Donahue, Tyler Hamilton, Collin McManus, Max Rothschild, Jake Silpe and Antonio Woods. Prior to Friday's game, the program will honor three graduating senior student managers: Marcus Devies, Sarah Parks and Austin Rahmin.

The Yale-Brown Home Weekend
• This marks the 60th time Penn has hosted the Bulldogs and the Bears on the same weekend. The Quakers have swept this home weekend 39 times (including last year), split it 17 times, and been swept three times.

• While Penn swept this weekend last year, the Red and Blue have been swept three of the last five years.

The Yale Series
• The Quakers and Bulldogs are meeting for the 231st time on Friday, with Penn holding a 149-81 lead in the series after Yale's 78-65 win in New Haven on Feb 9.

• Penn entered the season having won three of the previous four over the Bulldogs, including two last year here at The Palestra. After splitting the season series with the Bulldogs, Penn won an Ivy League Tournament semifinal, 80-57.

• Penn's 71-55 win at Yale during the 2017 season snapped a nine-game Bulldogs win streak in the series.

The First Yale Game (February 9)
Penn was down just three with less than five minutes to play, but Yale scored nine points on three possessions spanning 1:01 to put the game away. Devon Goodman and Antonio Woods had 16 points each, while AJ Brodeur recorded 14 points, eight rebounds and seven assists. Miye Oni led Yale with 21 points.

The Brown Series
• The Quakers and Bears are meeting for the 136th time on Saturday, with Penn holding a 108-27 lead in the series.

• Penn has won four in a row and five of the last six if you include its 92-82 win in Providence back on February 8. Prior to that, Brown had won five in a row over the Quakers; prior to that, Penn had won six in a row and nine of 10 over the Bears.

• Penn has reached the 90-point mark in each of its last four games with Brown; that has happened only one other time against an Ivy opponent, as the Quakers reached at least 90 points four straight times against Dartmouth from 1970-72.

The First Brown Game (February 8)
Penn never trailed, opening a double-digit lead before the game was five minutes old and leading by as many as 20 points in the second half. Goodman and Bryce Washington led the Quakers with 21 and 20 points, respectively. For Brown, Obi Okolie had 25 points, Desmond Cambridge added 21, and Tamenang Choh recorded a double-double (11 points, 13 rebounds).

Brodeur Earns Big 5 Honors
On Monday, junior AJ Brodeur was named co-Philadelphia Big 5 Player of the Week along with Temple's Shizz Alston Jr. This is Brodeur's third Big 5 honor of the 2018-19 season.

Penn by the Numbers
1 • Players in the Ivy League who are top five in conference scoring, rebounding, assists and blocked shots: Penn junior AJ Brodeur.

1.87 • Assist/turnover ratio in Ivy League games for senior Antonio Woods entering the weekend (43/23), tops among Ivy players; Brodeur is tied for third in that category with Yale's Miye Oni (42/32, 1.31).

2 • Two-point baskets hit by senior Jackson Donahue (no relation to head coach Steve Donahue) in last Saturday's win at Dartmouth; they were his first two-pointers of the season after hitting 18 three-pointers.

5 • The number of overtime games played by Penn this season, most since they played five such games in 2010-11; the Quakers—who went OT in three straight games from Feb. 15-22—are 1-4 in OT this season, and 3-8 in such games in the Steve Donahue coaching era.

5 • NCAA Division 1 players this year from China, including freshman Michael Wang. He shares the distinction with Michael Ou (CSU Northridge), Johnny Wang (Cal State Fullerton), Kevin Zhang (Tulane) and James Zhao (Cal).

6 • Double-doubles in Ivy League play this season for Brodeur, after he went for 19 points and 13 rebounds last Saturday at Dartmouth.

9 • Rebounds last Friday at Harvard by senior guard Jake Silpe, a career high.

10.0 • Points-per-game difference for junior Devon Goodman from last year (3.8) to this year (13.8).

11 • Penn players who have reached double figures in a game at least once this season, after Donahue dropped 10 at Dartmouth last Saturday.

12.1 • Woods' points-per-game average over Penn's last seven contests; he has hit double figures in six of them, the exception being Friday at Harvard (7).

13 • Games this season in which Penn has hit more than 10 three-point shots, including three of the last four contests.

13 • Minutes played by sophomore Eddie Scott last Saturday at Dartmouth; that was one more than his combined minutes (12) over Penn's previous 14 games, dating back to December 31 against Monmouth.

15.5 • Goodman's points-per-game average over Penn's last ten contests; he has reached double figures in nine of those games, and went for nine points in the tenth.

17.1 • Brodeur's points-per-game average for the season thus far, best by a Penn player since Zack Rosen averaged 18.2 ppg in 2011-12.

18 • Brodeur's place on Penn's all-time scoring list, with 1,298 points; Ty Pitts (1,301 from 1985-88) is 17th, while Tony Price (1,322 from 1977-79) is 16th.

22 • Consecutive double-figure scoring games by Brodeur after he combined for 43 last weekend at Harvard (24) and Dartmouth (19); he has 406 points during the streak (18.5 ppg) and 385 points over the last 20 games (19.3 ppg).

37.6 • Average minutes per game played by Goodman in Ivy League play entering the weekend, tops among Ivy players; Woods is second, at 37.2 mpg.

51.4 • Penn's field-goal percentage in its 17 wins this season; on the flip side, the Quakers' field-goal percentage in their 11 losses is 36.1.
