WILLIAMSBURG, Va. - The No. 23 University of Pennsylvania men's tennis team hit the road for the first time in a month over the weekend. When all was said and done the Quakers split, 4-3, matches against Old Dominion and William & Mary.
How it Happened
Coming off of their ECAC Championship and No. 23 ITA ranking, the Quakers hit the road for the first time since losing to No. 11 Baylor earlier this season. Penn began the weekend in Norfolk against Old Dominion. The Red and Blue would look to avenge their loss to the Monarchs from a season ago, but it would be no easy task as Old Dominion was 4-0 on its home courts heading into the match.
Against the Monarchs, the Red and Blue lost the doubles point, falling at number two and three. Edoardo Graziana and
Kevin Zhu lost 6-1 while Jason Hildbrandt and
Noah Makarome went down, 6-2.
At number one,
Kyle Mautner and
Dmitry Shatalin lost a close battle to the No. 24 doubles team in the nation, falling in a tiebreaker, 7-6.
In singles, Mautner cut the deficit to, 3-1, with a straight-set victory at the top spot. Graziani forced a deciding set at number two singles, winning the second set, 6-2. However, the freshman lost 6-3 in the third as Old Dominion clinched at, 4-1.
Shatalin and Makarome also earned win for the Quakers.
Penn looked to bounce back against William & Mary on Sunday. The Quakers once again fall behind early, losing the doubles point. Mautner and Shatalin won, 6-1, at number one, but with the doubles point on the line,
Max Cancilla and
Aleks Huryn fell in a narrow tiebreak, 7-6.
Zhu lost in straight sets to start off singles, but Mautner put the Red and Blue on the board with a straight set win of his own, 6-1, 7-5. Cancilla lost at number six as the Tribe went up, 3-1, however, Makarome came away with a 7-6, 6-4 win to bring Penn back within one. Down 3-2, the last two matches headed to a third and final set.
Graziani fell in a tiebreak while Shatalin won his second set, 6-1, to force a third. While the freshman, Graziani, fell in his second set tiebreaker, he got back on track and ran away with the third set, winning, 6-1, to tie the match at 3-3. Shatalin followed suit, taking his momentum from a dominant second set win, to take the third, 6-2, and clinch the first road win for the Quakers.
