PHILADELPHIA – The University of Pennsylvania men's tennis team exited day one of the Intercollegiate Tennis Asssociation (ITA) Ivy Conference Masters tournament with a perfect record of 1-0 in doubles play and 4-0 in singles play.
The tournament, which is being hosted at Penn's Hamlin/Hecht Centers, is a battle of the teams in the Ivy League, with a spot in the NCAA Championships on the line.
The doubles team of senior
Matthew Rutter and freshman
Nischal Spurling got the day started on the right foot, defeating the Yale team of Troy Kudrjavtsev and Edward Liao, 8-4. The singles portion proved to be just as effective, with Rutter and sophomore
Shaurya Bharadwaj dispatching their opponents in straight sets.
Saturday saw the Quakers have a full lineup, with three doubles matches and four singles matches in total. Penn went 1/3 in the doubles play and 3/4 in singles play. Freshman
Nischal Spurling, sophomore
Shaurya Bharadwaj, and senior
Matthew Rutter all advance in singles. The team of Bharadwaj & Vales defeated their first opponent of the day before falling in their next match.
On Sunday, Penn had three Quakers going. Two Quakers,
Shaurya Bharadwaj and
Matthew Rutter, had a draw against each other, with the former coming out victorious. Bharadwaj then played Harvard's Blokhin, defeating him in straight sets. This sets up a match with the country's #1 ranked player in Columbia's Michael Zheng. The winner of this match goes to the ITA Conference Masters tournament in San Diego.
On Monday, Bharadwaj's match with Zheng ended with a 2-6, 2-6 defeat at the hands of the Columbia Lion. Bharadwaj ends his Ivy Masters run with an impressive five wins across singles and doubles. He has been a key contributor to the team thus far and will look to continue to be so moving forward.
