#11 Women's Lacrosse Set for Battle at #17 Johns Hopkins

PHILADELPHIA - A three-game gauntlet on the road to open the season continues for the 11th-ranked University of Pennsylvania women's lacrosse team, as the Quakers will take their 1-0 record to Charm City for a top-20 matchup with the Johns Hopkins Bluejays. First draw is set for Saturday, Feb. 23rd at 1 p.m.

Series History
In 12 meetings all-time between the Quakers and the Bluejays, each team has taken six wins apiece. 2019 marks the third-straight year the two teams have met on the lacrosse field, with Penn owning wins in both 2017 and 2018. Both of the most recent meetings have been close affairs, with Penn earning a 10-7 victory in Baltimore two years ago, before notching a dramatic 12-11 win last year at Franklin Field.

High Rankings, High Expectations
The Quakers entered 2019 ranked 10th in the preseason IWLCA poll after finishing 12th in the poll last season. Additionally, Penn started the year No. 7 nationally in the Nike/US Lacrosse Preseason Poll, and has slid up to sixth after the first week of play. The Quakers checked in at No. 13 in the Inside Lacrosse preseason top-20.

This week, Penn checks in at No. 11 in the IWLCA poll, No. 6  in the Nike/US Lacrosse poll and No. 12 by Inside Lacrosse.

Against Ranked Foes
Coach Karin Corbett owns 52 wins against ranked opponents in her 20th season with the Quakers, and has boasted a winning record against teams in the top-25 each of the last three years. Both of Penn's wins over Johns Hopkins in 2017 and 2018 were with the Bluejays ranked by the IWLCA.

Dominating Start
Penn opened the season last weekend with a thorough performance on the road at Delaware, taking down the Blue Hens 15-4. The Quakers received a balanced attack offensively, featuring eight different goal scorers, while causing 12 turnovers and picking up 20 ground balls. Erin Barry and Zoe Belodeau led the way offensively as each tallied five points. Junior Mikaila Cheeseman made nine saves in the win.

Junior to Lead as a Senior
Selected as a captain for the 2019 edition of the Quakers, Katy Junior will bring valuable experience to Penn's backline this season. A two-time All-Ivy selection, Junior has started all 56 games of her career with the Red and Blue and ranked third on the team in both caused turnovers (23) and ground balls (38) last season.

Sophomore Sensation
Zoe Belodeau returns to Penn's attack after boasting one of, if not the most, decorated seasons by a freshman in program history a year ago. Finishing as Penn's first ever freshman first-team All-Ivy selection, Belodeau set the Penn rookie record for points (80), goals (45) and assists (35) in a season, while setting the program record with 103 draw controls on the year. Belodeau recorded at least one point in 18 of Penn's 19 games last year, including a season-high nine points with five goals and four assists against Harvard.

A (Rose)y Disposition
Another key returner on Penn's attack is junior Gabby Rosenzweig, who enters 2019 a year removed from tying Penn's single season points record with 85. A third-team IWLCA All-American, Rosenzweig led both the team and the Ivy League with 36 assists, while ranking second on the squad with 49 goals.

Barry Impressive
Junior Erin Barry rounds out a potent scoring attack for the Quakers, as Penn returns all three of its top scorers from last season. Tabbed as a unanimous first-team All-Ivy selection in 2018, Barry led the team in both goals (51) and ground balls (44), while ranking second with 24 caused turnovers.

A Tradition of Success
Penn has won 11 of the last 12 Ivy League championships, including three conference tournament titles, and have advanced to 12-straight NCAA Tournaments, the fifth-longest active streak in the country.

Aye, Aye Captain(s)!
Senior defenders Katy Junior and Lauren O'Mara have been tabbed as captains for the 2019 campaign of Penn women's lacrosse.

Rookie Debuts
The Quakers debuted seven members of their freshman class in their season opener against Delaware, including starts from Taylyn Stadler and Michaela McMahon. Both tallied their first career goals for the Quakers, while Stadler finished with an assist to boot.

Judging Johns Hopkins
The Blue Jays enter the weekend ranked 17th in the latest IWLCA poll, boasting a 2-0 record on the year with wins at Drexel and against then ninth-ranked Loyola last weekend. Picked to finish fourth in the preseason Big Ten poll, Hopkins returns two All-Big Ten honorees from last season including Shelby Harrison and Jeanne Kachris. Three players own at least six goals thus far for the Blue Jays, including Harrison, Ellie McNulty and Maggie Schneidereith.
