PHILADELPHIA – The Ivy League has announced its 2019 All-Ivy field hockey teams, and the University of Pennsylvania is represented by four student-athletes, headlined by first-team selection
Alexa Schneck.
Gracyn Banks,
Madison Jiranek, and
Elita Van Staden round out Penn's honorees, with each of the three earning their first All-Ivy selection with a spot on the second-team.
Schneck becomes one of three Penn field hockey players to receive All-Ivy honors in each of their four years with the program; joining Donna Berk (three-time first-team, one-time second-team) and
Alexa Hoover (four-time first-team) on the list. This season, she commanded the Quakers' midfield and finished the season ranked seventh on the team with eight points and second with four assists.
The Reading, Pa. native closes out her illustrious career with 53 points tallied from 19 goals and 15 assists in 66-career starts. The two-year captain always seemed up to the task in Ivy League play. Having started each of 28 possible Ancient Eight contests over her four-year career, Schneck totaled 38 points from 14 goals and 10 assists. She will represent the Red and Blue one final time as she travels to Winston Salem, N.C. to play in the Victory Sports Tours/NFHCA Senior Game on Friday, Nov. 22 at 7 p.m.
Banks was named to the All-Ivy second-team following a breakthrough sophomore year. After making just seven appearances in her freshman year, Banks made 14 starts and played every possible minute in the Quakers' first 11 games. She scored the Quakers' first goal of the season, finding the back of the cage directly off a corner and closed the season tied for second on the team with four assists.
Jiranek joined her fellow classmate with her first-career All-Ivy selection after being named to the second-team. The sophomore striker—who also plays a key role for the women's lacrosse team—appeared in all 17 of Penn's games including a start in each of the Quakers' final 15. Jiranek finished the year tied for second on the team with five goals and ranked third with 12 points.
Van Staden rounds out Penn's All-Ivy selections with a second-team honor after serving as one of Penn's primary defenders. She becomes the first Penn freshman to earn an All-Ivy honor since Schneck was named to the second-team in 2016. Van Staden closed out her freshman campaign as the team's leading scorer with seven goals and paced the team with 14 points. Two of her seven goals were game-winners, including a penalty stroke converted in overtime to seal a 2-1 win over Drexel.
The Quakers closed out the 2019 campaign with a 7-10 record and tied with Cornell for third in the Ivy League standings after a 4-3 conference finish.
