PHILADELPHIA - The University of Pennsylvania women's basketball team was picked to finish at the same level in the Ivy League that they finished last year: atop the conference. The Quakers earned 125 points in the preseason poll, matched by Princeton's 125, as the Ivy favorites. Votes came from two members of each school's media contingent.
Penn landed seven first place votes to Princeton's 10, as the two were 30 points ahead of third-place Harvard (95). Yale rounded out the top half of the league with 90 points, while Cornell (60), Columbia (47), Dartmouth (47) and Brown (23) filled out the remaining spots.
The Quakers have been selected either first or second in the Ivy League Preseason Poll in seven-straight years, and have received first-place votes each of those years.
This year marks the fourth year the Ivy League will hold a postseason tournament in women's basketball. The top four teams in the regular-season standings will meet at Harvard's Lavietes Pavilion the weekend of March 14-15 to determine the Ancient Eight's NCAA Tournament bid.
Penn will open the 2019-20 season on Saturday, Nov. 9, hosting Siena at The Palestra for a 12:00 p.m. tipoff. The Quakers' non-conference slate features five home games, the annual Big 5 opponents, and trips to Duke and Hawaii. Conference play begins on Saturday, Jan. 11 against Princeton in Philadelphia.
