Men's Soccer Staves Off Marist in Scoreless Draw

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. - For the third time this season, the University of Pennsylvania men's soccer team found itself content on one end of the field, yet yearning for more on the other, as the Quakers finished in a scoreless draw at Marist on Friday night.

PENN NOTES
*Senior goalkeeper Scott Forbes continued his run of good play this season, collecting a career-high seven saves while earning his fourth shutout of the season and sixth of his career, lowering his season GAA to 0.59.

*The Red and Blue totaled seven shots on the night, including three directly off set piece opportunities from junior captain Brandon Bartel. Jerel Blades, Alex Touche, Joey Bhangdia and Ben Stitz each contributed one, as five of Penn's seven shots were on goal.

*Penn faced a season-high 21 shots from the Marist attack, including nine corner kicks from the Red Foxes, the bulk of which came two or three at a time, keeping the Quakers' defense on its heels.

*For the second time in three years, Penn has gone into overtime in five of its first six matches on the year.

*Penn now owns three scoreless draws on the season for just the third time in program history and first since 2008 (at Marquette, vs. Buffalo, at Princeton).

*Penn's four shutouts on the season are already its most since posting six in 2013.

*The Quakers sport an overall record of 2-1-3 through six games for just the second time in program history and first since 1985.

HOW IT HAPPENED
It was a methodical pace to the match to start, with neither team doing much statistically, as the first shot of the match came from Bartel off a set piece in the 14th minute. After Bhangdia notched a shot of his own another 17 minutes later, Marist would hit another gear in its offensive attack in the waning minutes of the opening period, earning three corner kicks matched with three shots in the final eight minutes of play.

The Red Foxes picked up right where they left off after the break, posting another flurry of corner kicks and shot attempts, with Penn's defense proving to be up to the task. While Marist threatened throughout the match with several breakaway opportunities, the back four of Erumuse Momoh, Alex Touche, Casey Barone and RC Williams continued to make tackle after tackle and avert Penn from critical levels of danger when necessary.

With time winding down in regulation, Penn would begin to find its footing on offense, earning several corner kicks and Bartel again looked to Touche for another version of their previously successful connection.

Overtime saw another decent chance for Penn as Bartel slashed through Marist defenders before blasting a shot off a Red Fox player, while in net Forbes made clutch play after clutch play to preserve the shutout.

WHAT'S NEXT?
With Penn's longest road stretch of four in a row now in the rearview, the Quakers return to Rhodes Field for a midweek battle with in-state foe Bucknell on Tuesday, September 25 at 7 p.m.
