Men's Soccer Spurned in Double OT at Cornell

PHILADELPHIA - The early season overtime luck ended for the University of Pennsylvania men's soccer team on Saturday afternoon, as the Quakers were clipped in the 103rd minute, losing a 1-0 contest at Cornell. The loss drops Penn to 2-2-3 on the year and 0-1 in the Ivy League.

*Scott Forbes collected a career high 11 saves on the day. Forbes' shutout streak of 392 minutes ended with the golden-goal winner from the Big Red.

*Penn has gone into overtime in six of its first seven matches for the first time in program history.

*Cornell outshot Penn 18-8 and had six corner kicks to Penn's one.

*The Quakers are now 58-33-14 all-time against Cornell.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The game begin with the league's leading offensive threat, Cornell, racing out early and applying pressure to the Quakers' back four. The Big Red were efficient early in their shooting, forcing Forbes to make saves early and often, including twice in the first 10 minutes.

Penn's first shot of the match came from sophomore Joey Bhangdia, who received a ball in the box from Dami Omitamou and hammered it towards goal, but the Cornell keeper was in the right place at the right time to collect the save. The Quakers would feature several other chances in the first period, including shots from Brandon Bartel, Joe Swenson and Jake Kohlbrenner, but it was the Penn defense that was stressed late, fighting off three shots from Cornell's George Pedlow alone to enter the break with the score knotted at zero.

Play was even in the midfield to begin the second period, before Penn again had to avert danger in the box, blocking and saving multiple shots midway through the half. The Quakers boasted another strong chance from Kohlbrenner, who turned past his defender in the box to get a look at net, before sending the ball a hair wide. Ultimately, neither team would tally a score through 90 minutes, sending the match into a sudden victory overtime format.

Penn's only shot of the first overtime period came on a header from freshman Ben Stitz, while Cornell tallied two shots, including one off the crossbar. Penn's luck would run out early in the second overtime, as the Big Red connected on a goal from Emeka Eneli, scoring off a corner kick.
