PHILADELPHIA - Friday afternoon, the University of Pennsylvania baseball program earned five major individual distinctions from the Ivy League, as freshman
Eduardo Malinowski, sophomore
Peter Matt and juniors
Matt McGeagh and
Sean Phelan were named All-Ivy selections following their strong performances on the diamond this season. Malinowski -- the freshman phenom out of Spring, Texas -- headlined the four-man group, capturing Rookie of the Year honors after a season where he led the league in both batting average (.347) and total hits (59).
The Quakers split their group evenly across both the first- and second-teams, with Malinowski (UTL) and McGeagh (3B) carving out slots on the former behind seasons where they either led or competed for leads in multiple statistical categories within the league. The junior third-baseman closed out the year ranked first in RBIs (43), second in home runs (7) and slugging percentage (.508) and third in doubles (7). Meanwhile, Malinowski generated solid numbers in multiple areas, primarily utilizing his speed and clutch hitting as fuel for Penn's "small ball" approach on offense. Each first-team selection strung together team-high 11-game hit streaks, with McGeagh's ending in the series closeout against Cornell (4/22) and Malinowski breaking his in the season finale at Yale (5/13).
Second-team representatives
Peter Matt (OF) and
Sean Phelan (1B) also composed excellent years, with the former playing particularly well in Ivy play. The sophomore outfielder batted just over 80 points higher (.308 BA overall - .389 BA Ivy) in conference competitions compared to the season in general, notching 14 RBIs on 21 hits against the Ancient Eight. Phelan, on the other hand, maintained consistent play throughout the season, finishing 46-of-157 (.293 BA) with 28 RBIs and five homers, both second amongst Penn players. Further, the junior surrendered just two errors all season at first base, good for a .994 fielding percentage.
Of the four chosen Quakers, only Malinowski received previous recognition from the Ivy League, bringing home two Rookie of the Week awards late in the year. The first came following a brilliant performance at home against Cornell (three-game series) and La Salle (midweek matchup), as the freshman went 10-of-18 with six RBIs and his first two career home runs. Malinowski wrapped up the season with another strong quartet of outings at both Villanova (midweek) and Yale (three-game series), hitting 6-of-17 overall with two RBIs and four runs scored.
Among the Ivy League's eight members, Penn finished sixth in total players named to the two All-Ivy teams and Honorable Mention lists. Both Harvard and Columbia led the way with seven apiece while Dartmouth placed six, Yale and Cornell five, Penn four and Princeton and Brown two each. Dartmouth outfielder Dustin Shirley was tabbed as Player of the Year, Harvard RHP Noah Zavolas earned Pitcher of the Year and Columbia's Brett Boretti was named Coach of the Year.
The Quakers closed out the season 16-25-1 overall with a 9-11-1 record in Ivy play.
