PHILADELPHIA - One day removed from an Ivy League road series up at Harvard, Penn (8-17-1, 3-5-1 Ivy) hits the turnpike yet again for a midweek matchup with Monmouth (8-18, 3-6 MAAC), battling the Hawks Tuesday afternoon at 3:00 p.m. The three-game weekend slate against the Crimson got off to a rocky start -- dropping back-to-back games in Saturday's doubleheader -- but the Quakers manage to recoup their position in Sunday's contest, rallying late to lock up a 6-5 victory.
The quick bats continue to dominate Penn's approach at the plate, as freshman
Eduardo Malinowski (.347 BA) surged to the top of the team's leaderboards after going five-for-six in Sunday's win, even serving as the the Quakers' go-ahead run in the eighth-inning rally. Both senior
Andrew Murnane (.255 BA) and junior
Matt McGeagh (.262 BA) notched respectable numbers as well, with the former picking up an inside-the-park homer and the latter driving in the game-winning runs during the series finale. With sophomore
Chris Adams still currently ruled out due to injury, Penn looks to a number of young guys to pick up the slack, including freshmen
Christian Walton and
Jackson Petersen, both of whom picked up spots in the starting line-up in Adams' absence.Â
Freshman
Brendan Bean will, once again, take up the starting role in the midweek matchup, as his performance in last week's victory over Villanova (3.0 IP, 7 Ks) earned him an encore at Monmouth. The southpaw will be assisted by a number of relievers out of the bullpen, including fellow freshman
Cole Sichley (6.94 ERA) and
Robby Cerulle (2.70 ERA), junior veterans
Grant Guillory (6.39 ERA) and
John Alan Kendrick (6.57 ERA) and sophomore closers
Jacob Sadowitz (3.18 ERA) and
Dylan Mulvihill (2.08 ERA). Senior
Jordan Della Valle (3.00 ERA) has also garnered notable time the past two midweek games, picking up two outs at Saint Joseph's and an inning of work against Villanova.
SCOUTING MONMOUTH
The Hawks enter the matchup riding a three-game slump, falling in each of this past weekend's games at Quinnipiac. Prior to that, though, Monmouth looked much more formidable, winning two-of-three against Cansius and another versus fellow Ivy League member Princeton. The offense has stayed afloat off the bats of an RBI-centric trio, with Kyle Norman (.330 BA, 21 RBIs) leading the way and Shaine Hughes (.280 BA, 23 RBIs) and Pete Papcun (.277 BA, 20 RBIs) providing backup.
The pitching staff will similarly look outside its starting rotation for production in the midweek game, turning to Austin Counsellor (0.78 ERA, 23.0 IP), Kyle Ajjan (3.93, 18.1 IP) and Tyler Ksiazek (8.76 ERA, 12.1 IP) as the primary athletes to hold down the mound.
