CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - The University of Pennsylvania men's tennis team (15-12, 4-3 Ivy) wrapped up its season on Sunday afternoon with a 4-2 loss to Harvard. Despite finishing the season on back-to-back losses, the Quakers had their most successful year since 2006 finishing with 15 wins, four of which came in Ivy play.
How it Happened
With
Kyle Mautner and
Dmitry Shatalin going down 6-2 at No. 1 and
Josh Pompan and
Nicholai Westergaard losing 6-2 at No. 2 doubles, the Quakers headed into singles down 1-0.
In singles, Mautner bounced back after a close loss the day before against Dartmouth. Mautner defeated Kenny Tao in two routine sets, 6-4, 6-4.
Getting the other win for the Quakers was
Max Cancilla at No. 4. Cancilla converted on a late break to take the first set 7-5. The second set also turned out to be a battle, but once again it was the Penn sophomore who came out on top winning 11-9 in the tiebreaker to take the set 7-6.
At No. 5
Nicholai Westergaard had a tough loss. The senior came up just short going down 7-5 in the first before losing the second in a tiebreaker, 7-6.
In each of the four singles losses, Penn was unable to force a third set.
Josh Pompan's 6-4, 6-3 loss at No. 2 gave Harvard the fourth point as the Quakers lost 4-2.
