Brodeur, Betley Named to All-Big 5 Teams

PHILADELPHIA – The Philadelphia Big 5 has announced its 2017-18 award winners and All-Big 5 teams in men's and women's basketball, and the University of Pennsylvania is represented on the men's side by sophomores AJ Brodeur and Ryan Betley who were both named second-team All-Big 5.

Betley, Brodeur and all of the Big 5 honorees for the 2017-18 men's and women's basketball season will be honored at the annual Big 5 awards ceremony and Hall of Fame induction, which this year will take place on Monday, April 16 at The Palestra. Tickets for the event can be purchased here.

This marks the second-straight year Penn has had two players earn All-Big 5 recognition, after Brodeur and Matt Howard were second-team picks in 2016-17. Prior to that, the last time Penn had two players earn All-Big 5 honors in the same season was 2010-11 (Jack Eggleston, Zack Rosen).

Brodeur finished the 2017-18 season averaging 13.1 points and 7.2 rebounds per game, numbers that jumped to 14.8 and 7.6 in Ivy play. In conference play, he finished the year second among Ivy players in rebounding, tenth in scoring, tied for second in steals per game, third in blocked shots per game, and fourth in field-goal percentage. The Ivy League Tournament's Most Outstanding Player, Brodeur finished with 22 double-figure scoring games including four with at least 20 points, and he had five double-doubles—including both Ivy League Tournament games—and six games with more than 10 rebounds. Brodeur also was a first-team All-Ivy, first-team NABC All-District, and second-team All-ECAC selection this year.

Betley—who also earned second-team All-Ivy and second-team NABC All-District this season—led Penn in scoring this season, averaging 14.3 points per game, and in conference play he finished ninth in scoring (15.1 ppg), second in 3-point field goals made per game (2.8), fifth in 3-point field goal percentage (.448), and 15th in free-throw percentage (.741). The sophomore had 26 double-digit scoring games, a team high, including seven contests with at least 20 points and a 30-point outing in the regular-season finale at Brown. He also had two double-doubles. Betley has hit a team-high 84 three-point shots this year, which is fourth on Penn's single-season list, and his points-per-game average is the highest by a Penn player since Tony Hicks averaged 14.9 ppg in 2013-14.

Penn finished the year at 24-9, the most wins by a Quakers team since 2001-02. The Red and Blue tied Harvard for the Ivy League regular-season title, both teams going 12-2 in league play, then defeated the Crimson 68-65 in the Ivy League Tournament final to earn its first NCAA Tournament bid since 2007. Penn is scheduled to return four starters from this year's team and eight letter winners overall.
