SPARTANBURG, S.C. - Despite suffering back-to-back series sweeps at the hands of Wofford and Furman to kick off the spring break road trip, Penn (1-7, 0-0 Ivy) baseball aims to recover in the three-game weekend finale at USC Upstate (6-6-1, 0-0 ASUN). The Spartans host the set against the Quakers having won three of their past four - topping Charleston Southern on Wednesday and knocking off Longwood both Friday and Saturday - while Penn has suffered through a five-game losing slump after earning the season's sole victory just under two weeks ago.

While the record the past half-week reflects losses, the Quakers have actually played the past two series relatively close, first falling to Wofford by a combined four runs over three games before battling a power-hitting Furman to one blowout and another narrow loss over the midweek stretch. The Penn starting line-up has been working towards higher levels of consistency, but thus far the offensive load has fallen to a few bats: sophomore Chris Adams (.375) and juniors Sean Phelan (.323) and Matt McGeagh (.250), whose current production combines for 30 hits, 17 RBIs and five home runs on the year.

Meanwhile, the Penn pitching rotation has showcased a series of highs and lows to begin the season, as starters have been tough to hit early before surrendering late extra-base hits. For the series with USC Upstate, the Quakers have elected to go with Scafidi on Friday, ace right-hander Holcomb on Saturday and wrap up the three-game stretch with Hartman on Sunday. The former put together a solid performance in his game two start at Wofford, holding off the Terriers in the early frames before relief pitching gave up the lead late. Holcomb continues to look more relaxed in a weekend role after beginning the year as the first reliever off the bench while Hartman, who owns the lone victory for Penn this season, rests up following his tough outing against Furman on Tuesday.

SCOUTING USC UPSTATE

The Spartans have composed a good start to their season thus far, racking up six wins behind a competent pitching staff and pair of hard-hitting batters. Charlie Carpenter (.404) and Kyle Gensler (.362) have been dominant at the plate, compiling a combined 36 hits and 19 RBIs, but lead a batting order that struggles with power (just three home runs and three triples this season).
