GREENVILLE, S.C. - Following a slew of tight losses to Wofford in the Quakers' spring break debut, Penn aims to rebound with a short two-game trip to Furman in the midweek slot. Following the Tuesday/Wednesday matchups, the Red and Blue wrap up the 10-day journey through South Carolina with a series at USC Upstate.
Penn matched up well with Wofford through each of its three games this past weekend, falling by a combined four runs to the Terriers. The Quakers' bats came alive consistently for the first time this season, as juniors 1B
Sean Phelan and 3B
Matt McGeagh harassed opposing pitchers with a pair of home runs each and six combined RBIs. Sophomore 2B
Chris Adams also joined into the fray, racking up four hits and two RBIs, not to mention two critical doubles, during the three-game stretch.
For the Furman pair, the Quakers turn to senior left-handers
Jack Hartman and
Gabe Kleiman, the latter of which took the start in the series opener at Wofford. Hartman pitched Penn's sole victory this season, shutting down Northwestern State just over a week ago, while Kleiman still looks for his first win on the year after two starts thus far.
SCOUTING FURMAN
The Paladins enter the two-game battle with Penn sitting at 6-5 after having secured two of three during this past weekend's series against Central Connecticut State, not to mention a recent road shocker over SEC powerhouse South Carolina. The offense has been churning behind the efforts of a powerful batting trio: freshman OF Ben Anderson (.357), junior 3B Jake Crawford (.414) and senior C Jason Costa (.357), who combine on the season for 37 hits, 23 RBIs and four home runs.
As for the pitching rotation, Furman slots in sophomore Trent Alley and redshirt junior Nick Verbeke to face the Quakers on Tuesday and Wednesday, respectively. The pair has pitched just over nine innings apiece, with Verbeke serving most of his time in relief (one start with four appearances); however, with only a combined 21 hits and 12 runs allowed between the two, both aim to challenge Penn throughout their starts.
