PHILADELPHIA - Following seven schedule misfires - ranging poor field conditions to full-blown nor'easters - plagued Penn's home slate, the Quakers are finally set to christen Meiklejohn Stadium for the first time this season as fellow Ivy League foe Dartmouth travels down for a three-game series. Penn aims to knock off the Big Green after opening up conference play a week ago, stealing one win (behind an eight-run rally) during a near-freezing weekend at Brown.
Recent success at the plate has kept Penn close in each of the past four games, including two extra-innings losses and a brilliant eight-run rally, as juniors
Sean Phelan (.343 BA, 12 RBIs & three HRs) and
Matt McGeagh (.280 BA, 18 RBIs and four HRs) bring the power while sophomore
Chris Adams (.313 BA, 25 hits & .382 OBP) and freshman
Eduardo Malinowski (.324 BA, 22 hits & .378 OBP) add the scoring opportunities. Further, junior
Matt O'Neill (.206 BA) has gotten involved as of late, jacking two homers with seven RBIs over the course of the past four matchups.
Following the road series at Brown, the Penn pitching rotation looks much more solidified behind the strong showings from senior LHP
Gabe Kleiman and sophomore RHP
Christian Scafidi, with the former earning Big Five Pitcher of the Week for his performance. Meanwhile, sophomore
Mitchell Holcomb has stood out since the season-opener at Northwestern State, picking up a pair of weekly awards - Ivy League and Big Five Pitcher of the Week - twice thus far after significant execution on the mound.
The past week and a half has also seen the Quakers' bullpen capture some of the swagger of last year's bunch, as junior
Grant Guillory looks to have gotten his groove back (two solid outings), freshmen right-handers
Robby Cerulle and
Cole Sichley have taken over primary relief duties and the sophomore duo of
Dylan Mulvihill and
Jacob Sadowitz have slotted into the closer positions.
SCOUTING DARTMOUTH
The Big Green enter the weekend series with Penn sitting at 4-12 overall, breaking a six-game losing streak on Wednesday with an 11-4 home victory over Quinnipiac. The three-game road trip to Philadelphia will serve as Dartmouth's first dive into Ivy play, one week removed from the Quakers' own league opener at Brown. On the year, the Big Green's four wins have come with little consistency, as they initially knocked off Villanova and Georgetown during a Florida tournament before stealing one at CSU-Bakersfield and, as previously mentioned, defeating Quinnipiac in their home opener.
The Dartmouth offense has relied on a trio of bats thus far into the season, with Sean Sullivan (.470 BA & .533 OBP) leading the way behind 31 hits, three doubles and seven RBIs. Dustin Shirley (.333 BA) and Kyle Holbrook (.286 BA) have provided the crucial clean-up, knocking in a combined 19 runners with six doubles and three homers. As for the pitching rotation, the Big Green has looked to the weekend's three projected starters - O'Connor, Chatham and Fossand - the most thus far, as the group has worked just over 50 percent of total innings. O'Connor and Chatham currently serve as the team's top strikeout artists, boasting 14 and 15, respectively, while Fossand has put together the lowest opposing batting average, holding line-ups to .304 at the plate.
