PHILADELPHIA - Despite what calendars may indicate, what with the first day of spring come and gone along with April just over a week out, Northeastern weather continues to haunt Penn's (4-11, 0-0 Ivy) baseball program. With this weekend's Brown (4-7, 0-0 Ivy) series officially shifted to Providence, R.I., the Quakers will now play their sixth, seventh and eighth consecutive games off schedule, as last weekend's four-game slate with Fairleigh Dickinson moved to Brooklyn, N.Y. while Wednesday's midweek matchup with Lehigh was indefinitely postponed. Even with the poor roll of the weather dice, the Quakers have performed well in the face of adversity, picking up victories in three of their past five (all of which the back-end of doubleheaders).
The most recent of those wins stands out in particular for the Penn offense, a unit that returned eight of its nine primary hitters from last year but has struggled to gain momentum thus far into the season. Behind the efforts of senior
Andrew Murnane along with juniors
Matt McGeagh and
Matt O'Neill, the sleeping giant woke up Sunday afternoon, dropping a season-high 16 runs (including a grand slam) in the series-evening victory over Fairleigh Dickinson. Sophomore
Chris Adams (.333) and freshman
Eduardo Malinowski (.314) have also been swinging quick bats this season, leading the team at the plate with a combined 37 hits and nine doubles thus far.
Entering the weekend series, stud pitchers RHP
Mitchell Holcomb and LHP
Gabe Kleiman are slated to hold down the mound in Saturday's doubleheader. The duo have showcased their effectiveness over the course of the past four weeks, as the sophomore right-hander picked up two Ivy League Pitcher of the Week awards while the senior southpaw has anchored of the Quaker pitching staff since the offseason. Meanwhile, a quartet of young guns have stepped up in relief to assist Penn's primary starters, as sophomores
Jacob Sadowitz (0.00 ERA) and
Dylan Mulvihill (4.50 ERA) along with freshmen
Robby Cerulle (4.76 ERA) and
Cole Sichley (6.23 ERA) combine for 21.0 innings with just 16 hits and nine earned runs surrendered, not to mention a notable 25 strikeouts.
SCOUTING BROWN
Similar to Penn, the Bears have yet to host a game this season, struggling on the road to an early 4-7 mark. The past seven games have been particularly tough, as Brown has fallen in six of those matchups, finally topping perennial baseball powerhouse Dallas Baptist this past Sunday. Despite early success against Florida A&M, where the Bears picked up three of their four overall victories, road trips at Cal-Berkeley and Dallas Baptist slowed down the squad significantly.
Offensively, Brown manages behind the swing of Mark Sluys, who has racked up 14 hits and eight RBIs for a .368 average this season. The junior a talented trio of batters, as both Rich Ciufo and Garett Delano have also found success at the plate this year, totaling 26 hits with eight RBIs and two home runs. On the mound, the Bears are headed by Delano (1.93 ERA), Collin Garner (5.14 ERA) and Reid Anderson (9.88 ERA), a group that has racked up 25 strikeouts and three of the team's four wins thus far.
