MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. - The University of Pennsylvania men's tennis team closed out their trip to the mid-west on Sunday.
Dmitry Shatalin earned the Quakers lone win as he won 10-5 in a deciding third set tiebreaker against the ITA's No. 45 ranked player as they fell 6-1. Penn ends its weekend going 1-2 having defeated Drake on Saturday. The team will get ready to host UNC-Charlotte and Drexel for a double-header at Hecht Tennis Center next Saturday.
How it Happened
Penn finished their trip mid-west against the No. 41 team in the country. The Quakers were swept in doubles to begin the match going down 1-0 losing the doubles point. The three teams combined won just five games as
Josh Pompan and
Nicholai Westergaard as well as
Max Cancilla and Kayden Funk each fell 6-2 while
Kyle Mautner and
Dmitry Shatalin lost 6-1.
In singles, Mautner lost just his second match of the spring as he fell 6-2, 6-2 to Felix Corwin.
Max Cancilla fell in three sets. After losing the first 0-6, Cancilla bounced back to force a third by winning the second 6-3. However, the sophomore fell 1-6 in the third losing two sets to one.
Dmitry Shatalin earned the Red and Blue's lone win of the day. Shatalin defeated Stefan Milicevic who is ranked 45th in the ITA Division I Men's National Singles Rankings. The junior won the opening set by two breaks winning 6-2, but fell narrowly in the second in a tiebreaker 7-6. Shatalin went on to win the ensuing 10-point tiebreaker, 10-5, to earn the win.
