PHILADELPHIA – Thanks to her fifth match-winning goal of the season, Emily Sands of the University of Pennsylvania's women's soccer team was named Ivy League Player of the Week, the league office announced on Monday. Sands joined Sasha Stephens as Quakers to win the weekly award this season; Stephens' honor came on Sept. 10. The junior was also a three-time Rookie of the Week in 2016.
The goal came in a 1-0 win over Columbia in the only matchup of unbeaten Ivy League teams on Friday evening at Rhodes Field. Stephens triggered the goal-scoring opportunity in the 51st minute when she whipped in a teasing free kick from the right side that Allie Trzaska rose up and won in the air, directing it on target with her head. The senior's header was saved, but the rebound ricocheted in front of the net, allowing Sands to pounce on it. The goal was not only her fifth tally of the season, but it also served as Sands' fifth match winner.
Penn is enjoying one of its best seasons in school history, sporting an 8-1-1 record and an undefeated Ivy League campaign through three games. Sands tops the scoring leaders for the Quakers with 12 points on five goals and a pair of assists with Kelsey Andrews (nine points), Trzaska (eight) and Stephens (seven) providing a balanced bevy of scoring options.
Penn is back in action on Monday evening, traveling to Lehigh to take on the Mountain Hawks at 6 p.m. Ivy League action resumes on Saturday. Oct. 13 when the Red and Blue travel to Dartmouth for a 1 p.m. kick off.
