Volleyball Can't Sustain Early Lead, Falls 3-1 to Brown

PHILADELPHIA - The University of Pennsylvania volleyball team (5-15, 2-7 Ivy) fell to Brown on Friday night in Providence, 3-1 to lose the season series. The Quakers will be back in action on Saturday at 5 p.m. when they take on Yale.

Inside the Numbers - Box Score

* The Quakers were out-hit by the Bears .141 to .263 and had 44 kills to Brown's 51.

* Penn was blocked 14 times at the net against Brown. That is the second most that the Quakers have been blocked this season.

* This marks the first time since 2005 that the Quakers have lost both season meetings to the Bears.

* Parker Jones' 18 kills ties her season high which she previously hit against Delaware State.

* Penn was previously 6-1 when Jones recorded 18 or more kills.

* Jones recorded nine digs, putting her just one shy of her first double-double on the road this season.

* Brooke Behrbaum's two highest kill totals of the season have come against Brown. Behrbaum recorded 10 kills in the first meeting and added nine more on Friday night.

* Taylor Cooper took part in five of the Quakers' six blocks on the night. The senior now has 60 blocks on the year.

* Caroline Furrer led the team with 21 digs.

* For just the fourth time this season, Raven Sulaimon did not record double-digit kills in consecutive matches. The sophomore recorded eight kills in the team's last match last weekend against Princeton.

How it Happened

The Quakers came into Friday night looking to avenge their loss from earlier this season against Brown at The Palestra. Penn did get the early advantage by taking the first set to go up 1-0. The Red and Blue jumped out to a quick 6-2 lead, but lost six of the next seven points to fall behind 8-7. Parker Jones and Raven Sulaimon gave the Quakers back the lead with consecutive kills.

A 5-1 run that featured four combined kills from Brooke Behrbaum and Jones put Penn up 16-13. While Brown tied the score at 16 and again at 19, it was Penn that took control when it mattered early on. The Quakers ended the first set on a 4-1 run ended by Behrbaum's fourth kill of the frame to take the opener, 25-21.

Early deficits haunted the Red and Blue in the remaining three sets. The Quakers went down 9-3 early in the second and while 4-0 and 3-0 runs late brought them back within one at 23-22, the Bears evened the match at 1-1 taking the final two points of the set.

Set three saw Penn go down 8-2 early on its way to falling 25-12. Brown went on an early 7-1 run in set four as Penn trailed 12-6. Down 24-11, the Quakers did not give up taking four straight points to cut the lead to nine. However, Brown took the final point as Penn fell 25-15 in the fourth and 3-1 overall.
